Abstract

A surgical implant for fixing a soft tissue to a bone comprising a staple and a plate. The staple and the plate are positionable on an instrument in such a way that the plate may be manipulated with the instrument to hold the soft tissue against the bone and in such a way that the staple is fixable to the bone with the plate positioned between a bridge of the staple and the soft tissue when legs of the staple are driven through the plate and into the bone.

Claims (12)

1. A method for attaching soft tissue to bone, comprising:

supporting a staple and a plate in a spaced apart relationship to one another with an impacting instrument, the plate having an upper side and a lower side, and the staple having a bridge and a plurality of legs extending from the bridge, the bridge also defining a central hole having a closed inner perimeter, wherein the plate defines a central hole, and a sleeve of the impacting instrument extends through the central hole of the bridge and is attached to an inner perimeter of the central hole of the plate;

pressing the lower side of the plate against the soft tissue to hold the soft tissue in position against the bone; and

impacting the staple with the impacting instrument to drive the legs of the staple through the plate and into the bone so that the legs of the staple are fixed to the bone with soft tissue positioned between the plate and the bone and the plate positioned between the bridge of the staple and the soft tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plate has a plurality of blind holes, and wherein in the supporting step, the plate and the staple are supported relative to one another so that the legs of the staple are in alignment with the blind holes of the plate.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plate has a plurality of perforations, and wherein in the supporting step, the plate and the staple are supported relative to one another so that the legs of the staple are in alignment with the perforations.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the upper side of the plate has a recess configured to matingly receive the bridge of the staple with the legs positioned through the plate, and wherein the step of impacting the staple further comprises impacting the staple to cause the bridge of the staple to be matingly received in the recess of the plate.

5. A method for attaching soft tissue to bone, comprising:

supporting a staple and a plate in a spaced apart relationship to one another with an impacting instrument, the plate having an upper side and a lower side, and the staple having a bridge and a plurality of legs extending from the bridge, wherein the plate defines a central hole, and a sleeve of the impacting instrument is attached to an inner perimeter of the central hole;

pressing the lower side of the plate against the soft tissue to hold the soft tissue in position against the bone; and

impacting the staple with the impacting instrument to drive the legs of the staple through the plate and into the bone so that the legs of the staple are fixed to the bone with soft tissue positioned between the plate and the bone and the plate positioned between the bridge of the staple and the soft tissue,

wherein the sleeve has a front end attached to the central hole of the plate, the sleeve defining an inner channel and having an outer peripheral surface, wherein the inner channel is radially inward of the outer peripheral surface, and the impacting instrument further comprises an impact rod slideably arranged in the inner channel of the sleeve and an impact block that is affixed to the impact rod and slideably arranged on the outer peripheral surface of the sleeve.
