Abstract

A cable television (CATV) entry adapter interfaces to a CATV network and serves as a hub in an in-home network for passively communicating multimedia content or information from the CATV network and between subscriber devices connected to the ports of the CATV entry adapter, using CATV signals in a CATV frequency band and network signals in a different in-home network band.

Claims (40)

1. A passive cable television (CATV)/Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (MoCA) signal distribution apparatus, comprising:

an input port for receiving CATV input signals;

a radiofrequency (RF) output port for outputting CATV signals;

a Gateway port for connection to a Gateway device, for bidirectionally communicating CATV and MoCA signals;

a plurality of MoCA signal ports for connection to a plurality of MoCA devices, respectively, each of the plurality of MoCA signal ports for bidirectionally receiving and outputting MoCA signals;

a first splitter connected to the input port, and configured to provide first and second CATV output signals, the second CATV output signal being transmitted to the RF output port;

a diplex filter including a lowpass filter section configured to receive the first CATV output signal from the first splitter, and a highpass filter section configured to bidirectionally receive MoCA signals, while isolating the MoCA signals from both the first CATV output signal and the input port, thereby preventing the MoCA signals and the first CATV output signal from being combined at the input port; and

a second splitter including a first bidirectional MoCA signal line connected to the highpass filter section of the diplex filter, and a plurality of other bidirectional signal lines connected individually to the plurality of MoCA signal ports, respectively,

wherein the apparatus permits a plurality of MoCA clients to independently communicate the MoCA signals with the Gateway device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to allow the Gateway device to independently communicate with the plurality of MoCA clients.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the Gateway port comprises a principal port, and wherein the Gateway device comprises a network interface device.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the RF output port comprises an embedded multimedia terminal adapter (eMTA) port.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of MoCA clients are each associated with a respective one of the plurality of MoCA devices.

6. A passive cable television (CATV) and Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (MoCA) signal distribution system comprising:

an input port for receiving a CATV input signal;

a radiofrequency (RF)/CATV output terminal;

a Gateway port for connection to a Gateway device receptive of CATV and MoCA signals;

first splitter means connected to the input port, for splitting the CATV signal into first, second, and third CATV signal outputs, the third CATV output signal being transmitted to the RF/CATV output terminal;

diplex filter means individually receptive of the first and second CATV signal outputs, and individually bidirectionally receptive of MoCA signals, for both electrically isolating the first and second CATV signal outputs from the MoCA signals to prevent MoCA signals being communicated to the input port, and for bidirectionally communicating CATV and MoCA signals to the Gateway port; and

second splitter means for individually bidirectionally receiving MoCA signals from a plurality of MoCA clients, for providing the MoCA signals to the diplex filter means for connection to the Gateway port such that the system permits the plurality of MoCA clients to independently communicate the MoCA signals with the Gateway device, wherein the system prevents the CATV signals and MoCA signals from being combined at the input port,

wherein the diplex filter means includes:

a first diplex filter including a lowpass filter section for receiving the first CATV signal output, and a highpass filter section for bidirectionally receiving MoCA signals from the second splitter means, while electrically isolating the MoCA signals both from the first splitter means, and the input port; and

a second diplex filter including a lowpass filter section for receiving the first CATV output signal, and a highpass filter section for bidirectionally receiving MoCA signals from the second splitter means, for connecting the CATV and MoCA signals to the Gateway port, while electrically isolating the MoCA signals both from the first splitter means, and the input port.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the system is configured to allow the Gateway device to independently communicate with the plurality of MoCA clients.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of MoCA clients are each associated with a respective one of a plurality of MoCA devices.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein a common terminal of the second diplex filter receives the MoCA signals from the second splitter means, and wherein the highpass filter section of the second diplex filter receives the MoCA signals from the common terminal of the second diplex filter.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the Gateway port comprises a principal port, and the Gateway device comprises a network interface device.

11. The system of claim 6 , wherein the RF/CATV output terminal comprises an embedded multimedia terminal adapter (eMTA) port.

12. A passive Gateway splitter device comprising:

an input port for receiving a cable television (CATV) input signal;

a Gateway port for connection to a Gateway device;

a Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (MoCA) splitter comprising a plurality of ports configured for being connected to a plurality of MoCA devices associated with a plurality of MoCA clients, the plurality of ports further configured to communicate MoCA signals with the plurality of MoCA clients;

a first splitter connected to the input port and comprising a first output and a second output, the first splitter configured for receiving the CATV input signal from the input port, splitting the CATV input signal into a first CATV signal output via the first output and a second CATV signal output via the second output;

a first diplex filter connected to the first output of the first splitter for receiving the first CATV signal therefrom, the first diplex filter further comprising a first output and a second output that is connected to the MoCA splitter, the first diplex filter configured for electrically isolating the first CATV signal from the MoCA signals to prevent the MoCA signals from being transmitted to the first splitter; and
