Abstract

An asphalt additive comprising a primary rheology modifying component and a secondary rheology modifying component, and asphalt compositions and products having such additive incorporated therein. The primary rheology modifying component is generally a polymer, and the secondary rheology modifying component may comprise a petroleum micro-wax.

Claims (13)

1. An asphalt comprising:

ground tire rubber;

a first component comprising a petroleum asphalt; and,

a second component comprising particles formed from a melted mixture of a resin and a binder;

wherein, the second component is dispersed within the first component;

wherein the resin comprises polypropylene and polymers having glycidyl functionality; and,

wherein the binder comprises polyethylene by-product waxes.

2. The asphalt of claim 1 , wherein the resin comprises glycidyl alkylacrylate functionality.

3. The asphalt of claim 1 , wherein the resin comprises glycidyl methacrylate functionality.

4. The asphalt of claim 1 , wherein the resin comprises an alkylene-alkyl acrylate-glycidyl alkylacrylate polymer.

5. A method of treating a petroleum asphalt, the method comprising:

contacting the petroleum asphalt with an additive to form a treated asphalt, wherein the additive comprises polypropylene, by-product wax, and polymers having glycidyl functionality, wherein the glycidyl functionality is selected from the group consisting of glycidyl alkylacrylate functionality, glycidyl methacrylate functionality, alkylene-alkyl acrylate-glycidyl alkylacrylate functionality, and ethylene-butyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate functionality; and

adding ground tire rubber to the treated asphalt.
