Abstract

A system includes an inspection robot, comprising a plurality of wheels that engage an inspection surface; a plurality of sensors positioned to interrogate the inspection surface; and wherein the plurality of wheels each comprise a first magnetic hub coupled to a second magnetic hub, and wherein the plurality of wheels further define a channel between the magnetic hubs.

Claims (44)

1. An inspection robot, comprising:

a plurality of sensors positioned to interrogate an inspection surface; and

a plurality of self-aligning wheels that engage the inspection surface, each of the plurality of self-aligning wheels comprising:

a magnet;

a first enclosure; and

a second enclosure;

wherein the first and the second enclosures are disposed at opposing ends of the magnet forming a channel, and wherein at least one of the first or second enclosure comprises a guiding feature on a side of the at least one of the first or second enclosure facing away from the magnet, wherein each guiding feature is configured to track along the inspection surface.

2. The inspection robot of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second enclosures are ferromagnetic.

3. The inspection robot of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of self-aligning wheels further comprises a splined hub coupling the self-aligning wheel to a body of the inspection robot.

4. The inspection robot of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sensors are horizontally distributed on the inspection surface at selected horizontal positions.

5. The inspection robot of claim 4 , wherein the selected horizontal positions comprise an inspection distance between two horizontally adjacent sensors of the plurality of sensors that is not greater than a selected horizontal resolution.

6. The inspection robot of claim 4 , further comprising a plurality of sleds, and wherein each of the plurality of sensors is coupled to one of the plurality of sleds.

7. The inspection robot of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of sleds further comprises a bottom surface having a sled ramp.

8. The inspection robot of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of arms, wherein each of the plurality of sleds is pivotally mounted to one of the plurality of arms.

9. A system, comprising:

an inspection robot having a plurality of magnetic wheels that engage an inspection surface; and

a plurality of sensors positioned to interrogate the inspection surface;

wherein:

each of the plurality of magnetic wheels comprises:

a magnet,

a first enclosure, and

a second enclosure; and

the first and the second enclosures are disposed at opposing ends of the magnet forming a channel, and wherein at least one of the first or second enclosure comprises a guiding feature on a side of the at least one of the first or second enclosure facing away from the magnet, wherein each guiding feature is configured to track along the inspection surface, the channel further defining a means for self-aligning the inspection robot with a feature of the inspection surface.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the feature of the inspection surface comprises at least one feature selected from the features consisting of: a pipe, a tube, and a space between two raised features.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of sensors are horizontally distributed on the inspection surface at selected horizontal positions.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the selected horizontal positions comprise an inspection distance between two horizontally adjacent sensors of the plurality of sensors that is not greater than a selected horizontal resolution.

13. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a means for interrogating the inspection surface at a selected inspection resolution.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the selected inspection resolution comprises at least one of a selected horizontal resolution or a selected vertical resolution.

15. An inspection robot, comprising:

a plurality of magnetic wheels that engage an inspection surface having a ferrous substrate; and

a plurality of sensors positioned to interrogate the inspection surface;

wherein:

each of the plurality of magnetic wheels comprises:

a magnet,

a first enclosure,

a second enclosure, and

a contact surface comprising a first curvature, the first curvature matching a second curvature of one of a pipe or a tube of the inspection surface; and

the first and the second enclosures are disposed at opposing ends of the magnet forming a channel, and wherein at least one of the first or second enclosure comprises a guiding feature on a side of the at least one of the first or second enclosure facing away from the magnet, wherein each guiding feature is configured to track along the inspection surface.

16. The inspection robot of claim 15 , wherein the first curvature is at least one of:

defined in part by the channel; or

comprises a chamfer defined at least in part by at least one of the first enclosure or the second enclosure.

17. The inspection robot of claim 15 , wherein the first and the second enclosures are ferromagnetic.

18. The inspection robot of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of sensors are horizontally distributed on the inspection surface at selected horizontal positions.

19. The inspection robot of claim 18 , wherein the selected horizontal positions comprise an inspection distance between two horizontally adjacent sensors of the plurality of sensors that is not greater than a selected horizontal resolution.
