Abstract

Inspection robots with flexible wheel/motor positioning are described. An example inspection robot may have a housing having a first connector positioned on a first side of the housing, and a second connector positioned on a second side of the housing. A first drive module may include a wheel and a motor and be operatively coupled to the first connector. A second drive module may include a wheel and a second motor and be operatively coupled to the second connector, where the wheel may be interposed between the second connector and the second motor.

Claims (42)

1 . An inspection robot, the robot comprising:

a housing comprising a first connector positioned on a first side of the housing, a second connector positioned on a second side of the housing, and at least one removeable interface plate;

at least one electronic board within the housing;

a first drive module operatively coupled to the first connector, the first drive module comprising at least one wheel and a first motor, and the first drive module electrically coupled to the at least one electronic board within the housing via the at least one removable interface plate; and

a second drive module operatively coupled to the second connector, the second drive module comprising at least one wheel and a second motor, the second drive module electrically coupled to the at least one electronic board within the housing via the at least one removable interface plate, wherein the at least one wheel of the second drive module is interposed between the second connector and the second motor.

2 . The robot of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wheel of the first drive module comprises a first steerable wheel structured to maneuver the robot.

3 . The robot of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wheel of the first drive module comprises a first driven wheel structured to propel the robot.

4 . The robot of claim 3 , wherein the first driven wheel comprises a first steerable wheel structured to maneuver the robot.

5 . The robot of claim 3 , wherein the first motor is directly coupled to the first driven wheel.

6 . The robot of claim 5 , wherein the first driven wheel is interposed between the first connector and the first motor.

7 . The robot of claim 3 , wherein the first motor is indirectly coupled to the first driven wheel.

8 . The robot of claim 7 , wherein the first motor is positioned behind the first driven wheel relative to a direction of travel of the robot.

9 . The robot of claim 7 , wherein the first motor is positioned in front of the first driven wheel relative to a direction of travel of the robot.

10 . The robot of claim 7 wherein the first motor is positioned above the first driven wheel relative to an inspection surface.

11 . The robot of claim 7 , wherein the first motor is positioned outside the first driven wheel.

12 . The robot of claim 7 , wherein the second drive module comprises a second driven wheel, and wherein the second driven wheel is indirectly coupled to the second motor.

13 . The robot of claim 12 , wherein the first motor is positioned in front of the first driven wheel and the second motor is positioned behind the second driven wheel relative to a direction of travel of the robot.

14 . The robot of claim 12 wherein the first motor is positioned in front of the first driven wheel and the second motor is positioned in front of the second driven wheel relative to a direction of travel of the robot.

15 . The robot of claim 12 , wherein the first motor is positioned behind the first driven wheel and the second motor is positioned behind the second driven wheel relative to a direction of travel of the robot.

16 . The robot of claim 3 , wherein the first motor extends at least partially beyond a footprint of the housing.

17 . The robot of claim 16 , wherein the first driven wheel extends, at least partially, beyond the footprint of the housing.

18 . The robot of claim 3 , wherein the first driven wheel is positioned, at least partially, within a footprint of the housing.

19 . The robot of claim 18 , wherein the first motor is positioned, at least partially, within the footprint of the housing.

20 . The robot of claim 18 , further comprising:

a third drive module operatively coupled to a third connector, the third drive module comprising at least one wheel and a third motor, and

a fourth drive module operatively coupled to a fourth connector, the fourth drive module comprising at least one wheel and a fourth motor.

21 . The robot of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one removable interface plate includes a first removable interface plate on the first side of the housing and a second removable interface plate on the second side of the housing;

the first drive module is electrically coupled to the at least one electronic board within the housing via the first removable interface plate; and

the second drive module is electrically coupled to the at least one electronic board within the housing via the second removable interface plate.

22 . The robot of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electronic board includes an electrical communication configuration that is compatible with at least one of the first or the second drive module.

23 . The robot of claim 1 , wherein the first drive module is mechanically coupled to the first connector, and the second drive module is mechanically coupled to the second connector.

The robot of claim 1 , wherein the first motor is in line with the at least one wheel of the first drive module and is directly coupled to the at least one wheel of the first drive module, and the at least one wheel of the first drive module is interposed between the first connector and the first motor such that the first motor is positioned outside the first wheel relative to a center of the housing.

25 . An inspection robot, the robot comprising:

a housing comprising a first connector positioned on a first side of the housing, and a second connector positioned on a second side of the housing;

a first drive module operatively coupled to the first connector, the first drive module comprising at least one first wheel and a first motor

a second drive module operatively coupled to the second connector, the second drive module comprising at least one second wheel and a second motor; and

at least one electronic board and at least one removeable interface plate, wherein at least one of the first drive module or the second drive module is electrically coupled to the at least one electronic board via the at least one removeable interface plate,

wherein:

the first motor is in line with the at least one first wheel and is directly coupled to the at least one first wheel such that a rotation of the first motor rotates an axel or a hub of the at least one first wheel; and

the at least one first wheel is interposed between the first connector and the first motor such that the first motor is positioned outside the first wheel relative to a center of the housing.

26 . The robot of claim 25 , wherein the first motor extends at least partially beyond a footprint of the housing.
