Abstract

Inspection robots with center encoders are described. An example inspection robot may have a housing, and a drive module, where the drive module has a wheel and a motor and is operatively coupled to the housing. The example inspection robot may also have an encoder to provide a movement value, where the encoder is positioned within a footprint of the housing. The example inspection robot may also have a controller with an encoder conversion circuit to calculate a distance value in response to the movement value, a location circuit to determine at least one of a robot location value or a robot speed value, and a position command circuit to provide a position action command in response to the robot location value or the robot speed value. The drive module may be responsive to the position action command to move the inspection robot.

Claims (29)

1. An inspection robot, the robot comprising:

a housing;

at least one drive module comprising at least one wheel and a motor, wherein the at least one drive module is operatively coupled to the housing;

an encoder structured to provide a movement value, wherein the encoder is positioned within a footprint of the housing; and

a controller comprising:

an encoder conversion circuit structured to calculate a distance value in response to the movement value;

a location circuit structured to determine at least one of a robot location value or a robot speed value in response to the movement value; and

a position command circuit structured to provide a position action command in response to the at least one of the robot location value or the robot speed value,

wherein the at least one drive module is responsive to the position action command to move the inspection robot.

2. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the encoder is positioned at a center of the footprint of the housing.

3. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the position action command comprises a command to integrate the robot location value with data from at least one sensor.

4. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the position action command comprises a command to relay the robot location value to a remote device.

5. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the encoder comprises a contact encoder.

6. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the encoder comprises a non-contact encoder.

7. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the encoder comprises a passive encoder.

8. The robot of claim 7 , wherein the encoder is further structured to move vertically in response to an obstacle on an inspection surface.

9. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the encoder comprises an active encoder.

10. The robot of claim 9 , wherein the encoder comprises:

a wheel; and

a Hall effect sensor,

wherein the movement value comprises a value representative of a change in a magnetic field as the wheel rolls along an inspection surface.

11. The robot of claim 10 , wherein the wheel comprises a tire with a non-slip surface.

12. The robot of claim 9 , further comprising an encoder connecter structured to operationally couple the encoder to the housing.

13. The robot of claim 12 , wherein the encoder connecter is further structured to break away from the housing in response to impingement of the encoder with an obstacle.

14. The robot of claim 12 , wherein the encoder connecter comprises a spring structured to exert a downward force on the encoder.

15. The robot of claim 12 , wherein the encoder connecter is structured to allow vertical freedom of movement relative an inspection surface.

16. The robot of claim 12 , the encoder connecter comprising an actuator structured to adjust a position of the encoder relative to an inspection surface.

17. The robot of claim 16 , wherein the actuator is further structured to raise the encoder relative to the inspection surface.

18. The robot of claim 16 , wherein the actuator is further structured to provide a downward force on the encoder.
