Abstract

Compositions including an odd chain fatty acid, and salts and derivatives thereof, and methods for metabolic syndrome treatment and prophylaxis are provided, including compositions and methods for treating diabetes, obesity, hyperferritinemia, elevated insulin, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and related conditions. Methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic syndrome are also provided.

Claims (5)

1. A method of treatment of metabolic syndrome, comprising the step of administering to a patient in need thereof, an effective amount of one or more odd chain fatty acids or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein said one or more odd chain fatty acids is C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid), and wherein the said one or more odd chain fatty acids is in a pharmaceutical composition that is substantially free from even chain fatty acids.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more odd chain fatty acids or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof is provided as a pharmaceutical composition in a unit dosage form comprising the one or more odd chain fatty acids or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the unit dosage form comprises from 0.01 mg to 10000 mg of the one or more odd chain fatty acids or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein from 2.5 mg to 11 mg of the one or more odd chain fatty acids or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof is administered to the patient, per 1 kg of body weight, per day.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a serum concentration or a red blood cell membrane concentration of the one or more odd chain fatty acids is increased by at least about 0.01×10 −4 M above a pretreatment value.
