Interlocking buttress material retention system
A surgical stapler is provided having a pair of jaws including a staple containing cartridge and an anvil. Buttress material is releasable affixed to the staple containing cartridge and the anvil. One of the jaws includes a pair of longitudinal projections at a first end of the jaw and configured to frictionally engage corresponding slots in a first end the buttress material. One of the jaws includes a post at a second end of the jaw. The buttress material includes a hole in a second end of the buttress material for receipt of the post.
1. A surgical stapler comprising: a jaw assembly including an anvil and a staple containing insert, the staple containing insert having a tissue facing surface defining multiple sets of fingers extending from the tissue facing surface of the staple containing insert and shaped to retain a buttress material, the buttress material defining slots therein for receiving the fingers so that the buttress material is releasably disposed against the tissue facing surface.
2. The surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress material has a bioactive agent for delivery of the bioactive agent to tissue, the bioactive agent having pharmacological activity with the tissue.
3. The surgical stapler according to claim 2 , wherein the bioactive material is an anti-cancer agent.
4. The surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress material is a multi-layer material.
5. The surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress material is recessed into the tissue facing surface.
6. The surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein the staple containing insert includes a longitudinally extending knife slot, and the fingers are disposed on either side of the knife slot.
7. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the buttress material comprises a bioabsorbable material.
8. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the staple containing insert defines at least one linear row of staple pockets.
