Interlocking buttress material retention system
A surgical stapler is provided having a pair of jaws including a staple containing cartridge and an anvil. Buttress material is releasable affixed to the staple containing cartridge and the anvil. One of the jaws includes a pair of longitudinal projections at a first end of the jaw and configured to frictionally engage corresponding slots in a first end the buttress material. One of the jaws includes a post at a second end of the jaw. The buttress material includes a hole in a second end of the buttress material for receipt of the post.
1. A surgical stapler comprising:
a jaw assembly including a staple cartridge and an anvil, at least one of the staple cartridge or the anvil having a tissue facing surface defining a longitudinally extending knife slot therein and including a round projection extending from the tissue facing surface, the round projection shaped to retain a buttress material and including first and second halves defining a channel therebetween, the channel corresponding to the longitudinally extending knife slot, the buttress material defining a first recess therein for receiving the round projection so that the buttress material is releasably disposed against the tissue facing surface, the buttress material having a bioactive agent for delivery of the bioactive agent to tissue, the bioactive agent having pharmacological activity with the tissue.
2. The surgical stapler according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress material is recessed into the tissue facing surface.
3. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the round projection is disposed near a distal end of the at least one of the staple cartridge or the anvil.
4. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the buttress material comprises a bioabsorbable material.
5. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the buttress material comprises a natural biological polymer.
6. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the staple cartridge defines at least one linear row of staple pockets.
7. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the tissue facing surface of the at least one of the staple cartridge or the anvil includes a second projection.
8. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 7 , wherein the second projection is disposed near a proximal end of the at least one of the staple cartridge or the anvil.
9. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 7 , wherein the second projection has an elongate shape.
10. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 7 , wherein the second projection includes a neck portion and a bulbous portion.
11. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 7 , wherein the buttress material defines a second recess therein corresponding to, and configured to engage, the second projection.
12. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 7 , wherein the tissue facing surface of the at least one of the staple cartridge or the anvil includes a third projection.
13. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 12 , wherein the second and third projections are disposed on opposed sides of the longitudinally extending knife slot.
14. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 12 , wherein the buttress material defines second and third recesses therein corresponding to, and configured to engage, the second and third projections.
15. The surgical stapler as recited in claim 1 , wherein the round projection has a mushroom shape including an enlarged cap defining an underside flange configured to engage the buttress material.
