Abstract

A synthetic nutritional composition comprising choline for use to promote, support or optimise de novo myelination, in particular the de novo myelination trajectory, and/or brain structure, and/or brain connectivity, and/or intellectual potential and/or cognitive potential and/or learning potential and/or cognitive functioning in a subject, in particular a formula fed subject.

Claims (12)

1. A method to promote, support or optimize de novo myelination including de novo myelination trajectory, and/or brain structure, and/or brain connectivity, and/or intellectual potential and/or cognitive potential and/or learning potential and/or cognitive functioning in a formula fed infant up to 12 months of age in need thereof, the method comprising administering a synthetic nutritional composition comprising choline to the formula fed infant up to 12 months of age,

wherein the synthetic nutritional composition comprises the choline in an amount greater than 30 mg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition,

the brain structure refers to an amount and/or spatial distribution of myelinated matter throughout the brain and/or in specific brain regions, and the cognitive functioning is optimized if scores of the formula fed infant up to 12 months of age in a standardized neurodevelopmental test are less than one standard deviation different from that of an exclusively breastfed infant up to 12 months of age of a well-nourished mother, and

the synthetic nutritional composition further comprises iron; a fatty acid derivative comprising at least one of docosahexaenoic acid or arachidonic acid; and a phospholipid selected from the group consisting of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositole, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin, and mixtures thereof.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the formula fed infant up to 12 months of age is a human infant.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic nutritional composition comprises the choline in an amount of 170-300 mg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic nutritional composition further comprises a vitamin.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the vitamin is at least one of folic acid or vitamin B12.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises iron, the iron is in an amount greater than 5 mg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition; if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises folic acid, the folic acid is in an amount greater than 100 mcg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition; if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises vitamin B12, the vitamin B12 is in an amount greater than 5 mcg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition; if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises sphingomyelin, the sphingomyelin is in an amount greater than 300 mg/kg dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition; if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises a fatty acid derivative comprising DHA, the fatty acid derivative comprising DHA is in an amount of 60 to 350 mg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition; and if the synthetic nutritional composition comprises a fatty acid derivative comprising arachidonic acid, the fatty acid derivative comprising arachidonic acid is in an amount of 60 to 350 mg/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic nutritional composition is a composition selected from the group consisting of an infant formula, a composition for infants that is intended to be added or diluted with human breast milk, and a food stuff intended for consumption by an infant either alone or in combination with human breast milk.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic nutritional composition further comprises 60 to 350 mg of a fatty acid derivative comprising DHA/100 g dry weight of the synthetic nutritional composition.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic nutritional composition comprises about 2 to 6 g protein/100 kcal of the synthetic nutritional composition.
