Abstract

A hemodiafiltration system with a disposable pumping unit is disclosed. An example system includes a medical fluid pump actuator, a medical fluid heater, a blood filter and a disposable unit. The example disposable unit includes a medical fluid cassette portion including a medical fluid cassette housing configured to be operatively connected to the medical fluid pump actuator to pump medical fluid through the medical fluid cassette portion when the medical fluid cassette portion is in fluid communication with a medical fluid source. The example medical fluid cassette portion is also configured to be placed in fluid communication with the blood filter and with an extracorporeal circuit communicating with the blood filter, the fluid communication enabling hemodiafiltration to be performed. The example disposable unit also includes a heater bag configured to be placed in operable communication with the medical fluid heater and in fluid communication with the medical fluid cassette portion.

Claims (30)

1. A hemodiafiltration system comprising:

a medical fluid pump actuator;

a medical fluid heater that is spaced away from the medical fluid pump actuator;

a blood filter; and

a disposable unit including

a medical fluid cassette portion including a medical fluid cassette housing configured to be operatively connected to the medical fluid pump actuator to pump medical fluid through the medical fluid cassette portion when the medical fluid cassette portion is in fluid communication with a medical fluid source, the medical fluid cassette portion configured to be placed in fluid communication with the blood filter and with an extracorporeal circuit communicating with the blood filter, the fluid communication enabling hemodiafiltration to be performed, and

a heater bag configured to be placed in operable communication with the medical fluid heater and in fluid communication with the medical fluid cassette portion via a to-heater tube and a from-heater tube, wherein the heater bag is spaceable away from the medical fluid cassette portion, and wherein the spacing of the medical fluid heater away from the medical fluid pump actuator enables the heater bag to be placeable in operable communication with the medical fluid heater while the medical fluid cassette portion is operably connected to the medical fluid pump actuator.

2. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 1 , wherein the medical fluid pump actuator is a peristaltic medical fluid pump actuator.

3. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 1 , which includes a peristaltic blood pump actuator and wherein the disposable unit further includes a blood cassette portion having a blood cassette housing holding at least a portion of the extracorporeal circuit, the blood cassette portion configured to be operatively connected to the peristaltic blood pump actuator to pump blood through the blood cassette portion when the blood cassette portion is in fluid communication with a blood source, the blood cassette portion in fluid communication with the blood filter.

4. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 3 , which further comprises a hemodiafiltration machine including (i) the peristaltic blood pump actuator located at a blood pump portion of the machine operable with the blood cassette portion of the disposable unit, (ii) the medical fluid pump actuator located at a medical fluid pump portion of the machine operable with the medical fluid cassette portion of the disposable unit, and (iii) the medical fluid heater located at a heater portion of the machine operable with the heater bag of the disposable unit.

5. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 4 , wherein the heater portion of the machine is located between the medical fluid pump portion of the machine and the blood pump portion of the machine.

6. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 4 , wherein the medical fluid pump portion of the machine is located between the heater portion of the machine and the blood pump portion of the machine.

7. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 4 , wherein the heater bag in operation is placed between the heater portion of the machine and a door hinged to the machine.

8. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 7 , wherein the heater bag is positioned vertically between the heater portion of the machine and the door.

9. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 3 , wherein the blood cassette housing is integrated with the medical fluid cassette housing.

10. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 3 , wherein the blood cassette housing is located at a first side of the disposable unit and the medical fluid cassette housing is located at a second side of the disposable unit.

11. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 1 , wherein the medical fluid cassette housing holds a medical fluid line leading to an inlet of the blood filter.

12. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 11 , wherein the medical fluid line is additionally directly connected to the extracorporeal circuit.

13. A hemodiafiltration system comprising:

a peristaltic blood pump actuator;

a peristaltic medical fluid pump actuator;

a blood filter;

a medical fluid heater; and

a disposable unit including

a blood portion configured to be operatively connected to the peristaltic blood pump actuator to pump blood through the blood portion when the blood portion is in fluid communication with a blood source, the blood portion in fluid communication with the blood filter and housing at least a portion of an extracorporeal circuit in fluid communication with the blood filter,

a medical fluid portion configured to be operatively connected to the peristaltic medical fluid pump actuator to pump medical fluid through the medical fluid portion when the medical fluid portion is in fluid communication with a medical fluid source, the medical fluid portion including a medical fluid line leading to an inlet of the blood filter and to the extracorporeal circuit, enabling hemodiafiltration to be performed, and

a heater bag configured to be placed in operable communication with the medical fluid heater and in fluid communication with the medical fluid portion via a to-heater tube and a from-heater tube, the to-heater tube in fluid communication with the from-heater tube via a serpentine heating pathway provided within the heater bag, wherein the heater bag is spaceable away from the blood portion and the medical fluid portion for operation.

14. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 13 , which includes a hemodiafiltration machine including (i) the peristaltic blood pump actuator located at a blood pump portion of the machine operable with the blood portion of the disposable unit, (ii) the peristaltic medical fluid pump actuator located at a medical fluid pump portion of the machine operable with the medical fluid portion of the disposable unit, and (iii) the medical fluid heater located at a heater portion of the machine operable with the heater bag of the disposable unit.

15. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 14 , wherein the medical fluid portion further includes a used medical fluid pumping tube for pumping effluent medical fluid from the blood filter.

16. The hemodiafiltration system of claim 14 , wherein the blood portion of the disposable unit includes a fluid passageway dedicated to accepting an auxiliary fluid different than blood.
