Abstract

Combined methods for treating a patient using time-varying magnetic field are described. The treatment methods combine various approaches for aesthetic treatment. The methods are focused on enhancing a visual appearance of the patient.

Claims (75)

1. A method for treating a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a current to a first magnetic field generating device to generate a first time-varying magnetic field, wherein the first time-varying magnetic field comprises an impulse duration in a range between 3 μs and 10000 μs and a magnetic flux density in a range between 0.1 Tesla and 7 Tesla;

providing a current to a second magnetic field generating device to generate a second time-varying magnetic field with an impulse duration in a range between 3 μs and 10000 μs and a magnetic flux density in a range between 0.1 Tesla and 7 Tesla;

applying the first and second time-varying magnetic fields to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within a body region of the patient such that a muscle is caused to contract; and

cooling adipose cells within the body region of the patient with a cooling element having a temperature of between 20° C. and −20° C.;

wherein the step of applying the first and second time-varying magnetic fields further comprises:

generating a plurality of bursts including at least one first burst and at least one second burst, each burst having a duration, wherein each of said bursts includes: (i) a train of magnetic pulses configured to cause a muscle contraction by the patient, (ii) a time period without generating a magnetic field that is configured to cause muscle contraction by the patient, wherein the time period follows the train of magnetic pulses;

applying the at least one first burst to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the body region of the patient, wherein each said first burst comprises a first train of magnetic pulses having a duration in a range between 1 seconds and 15 seconds and a repetition rate in a range between 1 Hz and 100 Hz;

applying the at least one second burst to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the body region of the patient, wherein each said second burst comprises a second train of magnetic pulses having a duration in a range between 1 seconds and 15 seconds and a repetition rate in a range between 2 Hz and 90 Hz; and

wherein the at least one first burst differs from the at least one second burst by at least one treatment parameter selected from a group consisting of the magnetic flux density, the repetition rate of the magnetic pulses, a duration of the burst, and a duration of the train.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the body region includes at least one of a buttock, a thigh, a hip, an abdomen, an arm, or flanks of the patient.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields are simultaneously applied.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the cooling step is performed no more than three months before or after the time-varying magnetic field application step.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

placing a first applicator housing the first magnetic field generating device and a second applicator housing the second magnetic field generating device in contact with the patient's skin or clothing.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

coupling the first and second applicators to the patient with a belt.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a negative pressure to the patient's skin within the body region of the patient during the cooling step such that the cooling element contacts the patient's skin.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

placing a first applicator housing the first magnetic field generating device and placing a second applicator housing the second magnetic field generating device on a patient, the first and second applicators being disposed in a lateral direction along the patient.

9. A method for treating at least one body region of a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

placing an applicator comprising a magnetic field generating device in contact with patient's skin;

attaching the applicator to the at least one body region of the patient via a flexible belt;

generating, by the magnetic field generating device, a time-varying magnetic field, wherein the time-varying magnetic field comprises a magnetic flux density in a range between 0.1 Tesla and 7 Tesla and a plurality of magnetic pulses with a repetition rate in a range between 1 Hz and 300 Hz;

applying the time-varying magnetic field to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the at least one body region of the patient such that a muscle is caused to contract; and

cooling adipose cells within the at least one body region of the patient with a cooling element having a temperature in a range between 20° C. and −20° C.;

wherein the step of applying further comprises:

modulating the plurality of magnetic pulses of the time-varying magnetic field into at least one train of magnetic pulses, each said train of magnetic pulses lasting for a time period in a range between 1 second and 30 seconds;

applying the at least one train of magnetic pulses to the muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the at least one body region of the patient such that the muscle is caused to contract; and

establishing a burst by generating no pulses of the time-varying magnetic field for a time period lasting in a range between 1 second and 30 seconds after applying a last magnetic pulse of the at least one train of magnetic pulses.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the applicator includes a first applicator and a second applicator, and the magnetic field generating device includes a first magnetic field generating device housed in the first applicator and a second magnetic field generating device housed in the second applicator;

wherein the first and second applicators are attached to the at least one body region of the patient via the flexible belt;

wherein the steps of generating and applying the time-varying magnetic field further comprises:

using the first applicator housing the first magnetic field generating device and the second applicator housing the second magnetic field generating device to apply the time-varying magnetic field to cooperating or pair muscles.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first applicator comprises a connecting tube connected to a source of fluid.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of cooling further comprises:

using a cooling media to cool the adipose cells.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one body region is located between:

a) costae and pubic bone of the patient; or

b) gluteal fold and iliac crest; or

c) gluteal sulcus and popliteal fossa.

The method of claim 9 , wherein each said train of magnetic pulses is modulated as a trapezoidal envelope such that an amplitude of a magnetic flux density of the magnetic pulses increases over a first subperiod of the time period of each said train, remains constant over a second subperiod of the time period of each said train, and decreases over a third time subperiod of the time period of each said train.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

applying a negative pressure to the patient's skin within the at least one body region of the patient, such that the cooling element contacts the patient's skin.

16. A method for treating a body region of a patient, the method comprising:

charging a first energy storage device and a second energy storage device;

discharging a current pulse from the first energy storage device to a first magnetic field generating device to generate a first time-varying magnetic field;

discharging a current pulse from the second energy storage device to a second magnetic field generating device to generate a second time-varying magnetic field;

applying the first and second time-varying magnetic fields to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the body region of the patient such that a muscle is caused to contract; and

cooling an epidermis of the patient with a cooling element or a cooling media.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields each comprise at least one train of magnetic pulses, each said train lasts for a duration comprising a first time subperiod, a second time subperiod, and a third time subperiod;

wherein during the first time subperiod, an amplitude of a magnetic flux density of each said magnetic pulse of each said train is increased toward a predetermined magnetic flux density value;

wherein during the second time subperiod, the amplitude of the magnetic flux density of each said magnetic pulse of each said train is maintained at the predetermined magnetic flux density value; and

wherein during the third time subperiod, the amplitude of the magnetic flux density of each said magnetic pulse of each said train is decreased from the predetermined magnetic flux density value toward a magnetic flux density value of zero.

18. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

coupling a first applicator housing the first magnetic field generating device and a second applicator housing the second magnetic field generating device to the patient with a belt, such that the belt holds the first and second applicators against the patient's skin or clothing.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the first and second applicators each include a handle for manual positioning the first and second applicators along a body of the patient.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the first and second applicators each comprises a concavity for receiving the belt.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of cooling the epidermis of the patient lasts for a time period of at least 10 seconds.

22. The method of claim 16 , wherein the body region includes at least one of a buttock, a thigh, a hip, an abdomen, an arm, or flanks of the patient.

23. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields are simultaneously applied.

24. A method for treating a body region of a patient, the method comprising:

placing a first applicator comprising a first magnetic field generating device and a second applicator comprising a second magnetic field generating device proximate to the body region of the patient;

generating a first time-varying magnetic field and a second time-varying field by repetitively supplying a current pulse to the first and second magnetic field generating devices, wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields each comprise a magnetic flux density in a range between 0.1 Tesla and 7 Tesla;

applying at least one of the first and second time-varying magnetic fields to muscle fibers, neuromuscular plates, or peripheral nerves innervating muscle fibers within the body region of the patient such that a muscle is caused to contract; and

cooling an epidermis of the patient with a cooling element having a temperature between 10° C. and −15° C.

25. The method of claim 24 , further comprising:

attaching the first and second applicators to the patient's skin or clothing via a belt.

26. The method of claim 25 , further comprising:

applying negative pressure to the patient's skin within the body region of the patient during the cooling step such that the cooling element contacts the patient's skin.

27. The method of claim 25 , wherein the first and second applicators each comprise a concavity for receiving the belt.

28. The method of claim 24 , wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields are simultaneously applied.

29. The method of claim 24 , wherein the first and second time-varying magnetic fields are applied simultaneously to two different regions of the body such that at least two different muscles are caused to contract.

30. The method of claim 24 , wherein the step of cooling further comprises using a positioning member to fix the cooling element to the patient.
