Abstract

A ceiling fan including a retention system and method of redundantly retaining a ceiling fan can include a ceiling fan motor assembly including a hollow motor shaft at least partially surrounded by a motor housing. A retainer plate is provided at the bottom of the motor housing including an opening. A retainer rod extends through the opening in the retainer plate and secures to the retainer plate. A support cable couples to the retainer rod to suspend the retainer plate from a structure, wherein the retainer plate is configured to redundantly retainer the ceiling fan.

Claims (44)

1. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly comprising a stator; an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft; and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of and within the motor housing, and wholly below the motor shaft; and

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft,

wherein an end of the retainer has a cap that abuts the retainer plate to carry the retainer plate.

2. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer is a retaining rod.

3. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer plate includes an opening and the retainer passes through the opening.

4. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer extends through the retainer plate and the retainer plate hangs on the cap.

5. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer couples to a structure suspending the ceiling fan.

6. The ceiling fan of claim 1 further comprising at least one mounting hole provided in the retainer plate.

7. The ceiling fan of claim 1 wherein the retainer plate is configured to redundantly carry the motor assembly.

8. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly comprising a stator; an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft; and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of and within the motor housing, and wholly below the motor shaft; and

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft,

wherein the retainer plate includes a recessed portion configured to seat the cap.

9. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly comprising a stator; an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft; and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of and within the motor housing, and wholly below the motor shaft; and

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft,

wherein the retainer plate includes an inner portion and an outer portion with the inner portion raised from the outer portion.

10. The ceiling fan of claim 9 wherein the outer portion is configured to carry the motor assembly at the motor housing.

11. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly comprising a stator; an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft; and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of and within the motor housing, and wholly below the motor shaft; and

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft,

wherein the motor shaft mounts to the retainer plate at the at least one mounting hole.

12. A ceiling fan comprising:

a motor assembly comprising a stator; an annular, hollow, non-rotating motor shaft; and a motor housing;

a retainer plate positioned at a bottom of and within the motor housing, and wholly below the motor shaft;

a retainer coupled to the retainer plate, and passing longitudinally along and at least partially through the motor shaft; and

further comprising a support cable coupled to the retainer wherein the support cable terminates in a clevis and the retainer terminates in a flat mount end configured to insert into the clevis to couple the retainer to the support cable.

13. The ceiling fan of claim 12 further comprising a downrod coupled to the motor shaft with the support cable extending at least partially through the downrod.

14. The ceiling fan of claim 12 wherein the support cable couples to a structure suspending the motor assembly.

15. A mounting system for a ceiling fan having a hollow motor shaft and a motor housing, the mount system comprising:

a retainer plate including an opening and positioned wholly below the motor shaft;

a retaining rod passing longitudinally through the motor shaft and through the opening in the retainer plate, and including a cap configured to carry the retainer plate on the retaining rod; and

a support cable coupled to the retaining rod configured to suspend the retaining rod from a structure;

wherein the retainer plate provides a redundant mount for the ceiling fan.

16. A method of redundantly suspending a ceiling fan having a motor shaft, the method comprising:

suspending a retainer plate from the motor shaft, with the retainer plate positioned at a bottom of the ceiling fan, wholly below the motor shaft, and within a motor housing coupled to the motor shaft;

wherein the retainer plate is configured to redundantly support the ceiling fan by carrying the ceiling fan on the retainer plate.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein suspending the retainer plate further includes coupling the retainer plate to a retainer rod passing through the motor shaft of the ceiling fan.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein suspending the retainer plate further includes coupling the retainer rod to a support cable coupled to the structure suspending the ceiling fan.
