Abstract

A printed energy storage device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a separator between the first and the second electrode. At least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator includes frustules, for example of diatoms. The frustules may have a uniform or substantially uniform property or attribute such as shape, dimension, and/or porosity. A property or attribute of the frustules can also be modified by applying or forming a surface modifying structure and/or material to a surface of the frustules. A membrane for an energy storage device includes frustules. An ink for a printed film includes frustules.

Claims (27)

1. A frustule comprising:

a plurality of perforations through the frustule; and

a layer of silver nanostructures substantially covering at least interior and exterior surfaces of the frustule,

wherein the frustule is included in an electrode.

2. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures has a thickness of 10 nanometers to 500 nanometers.

3. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures substantially covers all surfaces of the frustule including the interior surfaces of the perforations.

4. The frustule of claim 3 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures formed on the interior surfaces of at least some of the perforations has a thickness such that the perforations are not occluded by the layer of silver nanostructures.

5. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the perforations has a diameter of 250 nanometers to 350 nanometers.

6. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures comprises one or more of nanowires, nanospheres, nanoplates, nanoparticles, nanodisks or nanobelts.

7. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein the frustule is formed of silica, and wherein the layer of silver nanostructures is formed directly on a silica surface of the frustule.

8. The frustule of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is a part of an energy storage device.

9. A silver ink configured to be printed to form an electrode for an energy storage device, the silver ink comprising:

an ultraviolet light sensitive component; and

a plurality of frustules, wherein each of the frustules comprises a surface comprising a plurality of perforations and a layer of silver nanostructures formed on the surface.

10. The silver ink of claim 9 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures is formed on one or both of an exterior surface and an interior surface of each of the frustules.

11. The silver ink of claim 9 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures substantially covers all surfaces of each of the frustules including the interior surfaces of the perforations.

12. The silver ink of claim 11 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures formed on the interior surfaces of at least some of the perforations has a thickness such that the perforations are not occluded by the layer of silver nanostructures.

13. The silver ink of claim 9 , wherein the silver ink comprises a frustule amount of 50 weight percent to 80 weight percent on the basis of a total weight of the silver ink.

14. The silver ink of claim 9 , wherein the perforations have a size such that UV light incident thereon passes therethrough, such that the silver ink is curable by an ultraviolet radiation.

15. The silver ink of claim 9 , wherein the silver ink is thermally curable.

16. A printed film comprising:

a plurality of frustules, wherein each of the frustules comprises a surface comprising a plurality of perforations and a layer of silver nanostructures formed on the surface,

wherein the printed film is included in an electrode.

17. The printed film of claim 16 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures is formed on one or both of an exterior surface and an interior surface of each of the frustules.

18. The printed film of claim 16 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures substantially covers all surfaces the frustules.

19. The printed film of claim 16 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures has a thickness of 10 nanometers to 500 nanometers.

20. The printed film of claim 16 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures comprises one or more of nanowires, nanospheres, nanoplates, nanoparticles, nanodisks or nanobelts.
