Abstract

A user equipment implements a method of processing in messages, such as SCRI (signalling connection release indication) messages. The user equipment (UE) maintains a count of how many indication messages with a cause set have been seat by the UE while in at least one radio resource control (RRC) state. Various conditions are provided for resetting the count. These include receiving packet switched (PS) data by the UE and transmitting packet switched (PS) data.

Claims (40)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

maintaining, at a user equipment (UE), a count of messages that the UE sent to a wireless network to initiate a state transition of the UE from a radio resource control (RRC) connected state to a battery-efficient RRC connected state or to an idle mode;

determining whether a current value of the count is equal to or exceeds a predetermined value;

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being equal to or exceeding the predetermined value, stopping the sending of further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode;

while the sending of further messages is stopped, determining that the UE has uplink packet switched (PS) data to transmit or the UE has received a page; and

in response to determining that the UE has uplink PS data to transmit or has received a page, resetting the count before sending further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode is controlled by the wireless network.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being less than the predetermined value, transmitting a request message to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the messages requesting the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode are sent by the UE while the UE is in the RRC state.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the RRC connected state comprises at least one of a CELL_PCH state or a URA_PCH state.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein maintaining a count comprises using a counter.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein maintaining a count includes incrementing the count.

8. A user equipment (UE), comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor communicatively coupled with the memory and configured to:

maintain a count of messages that the UE sent to a wireless network to initiate a state transition of the UE from a radio resource control (RRC) connected state to a battery-efficient RRC connected state or to an idle mode;

determine whether a current value of the count is equal to or exceeds a predetermined value;

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being equal to or exceeding the predetermined value, stop the sending of further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode;

while the sending of further messages is stopped, determine that the UE has uplink packet switched (PS) data to transmit or the UE has received a page; and

in response to determining that the UE has uplink PS data to transmit or has received a page, reset the count before sending further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

9. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode is controlled by the wireless network.

10. The UE of claim 8 , where the at least one processor is further configured to:

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being less than the predetermined value, transmit a request message to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

11. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the messages requesting the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode are sent by the UE while the UE is in the RRC state.

12. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the RRC connected state comprises at least one of a CELL_PCH state or a URA_PCH state.

13. The UE of claim 8 , wherein maintaining a count comprises using a counter.

14. The UE of claim 8 , wherein maintaining a count includes incrementing the count.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause a user equipment (UE) to perform operations comprising:

maintaining, at the UE, a count of messages that the UE sent to a wireless network to initiate a state transition of the UE from a radio resource control (RRC) connected state to a battery-efficient RRC connected state or to an idle mode;

determining whether a current value of the count is equal to or exceeds a predetermined value;

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being equal to or exceeding the predetermined value, stopping the sending of further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode;

while the sending of further messages is stopped, determining that the UE has uplink packet switched (PS) data to transmit or the UE has received a page; and

in response to determining that the UE has uplink PS data to transmit or has received a page, resetting the count before sending further messages to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode is controlled by the wireless network.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , the operations further comprising:

in response to a determination of the current value of the count being less than the predetermined value, transmitting a request message to the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the messages requesting the wireless network to initiate the state transition of the UE from the RRC connected state to the battery-efficient RRC connected state or to the idle mode are sent by the UE while the UE is in the RRC state.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein maintaining a count comprises using a counter.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein maintaining a count includes incrementing the count.
