Abstract

A device comprising a plurality of metallic conical radiators, said conical radiators substantially hollow having a vertex end and a base end, a first cylindrical portion disposed annularly about the base end of the conical portion, a metallic second cylindrical portion coupled to the vertex of the conical portion, said cylindrical portion having a threaded aperture, and an antenna feed coupled to the threaded aperture. The device may have patches disposed on a substrate as a one or multi-dimensional array. An RF feed may be coupled to the radiators.

Claims (24)

1. A device comprising:

a plurality of electrically conductive patches disposed in a linear array on a first surface of an insulated substrate, wherein the insulated substrate has a ground plane disposed on a second surface opposite the first surface;

a plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators comprising a respective conical radiator coupled to each patch of the plurality of electrically conductive patches.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein each conical radiator is spaced apart a distance of approximately either 8.75 centimeters or 4.2 centimeters from one or more adjacent conical radiators.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein a diameter of a base of one or more conical radiators of the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators is approximately either 5 centimeters or 2.4 centimeters.

4. The device of claim 1 further including a feed connector electrically coupled to an apex portion of one or more conical radiators of the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the feed connector is electrically coupled to a radio.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein an access point is electronically coupled to the feed connector.

7. The device of claim 1 further including:

a second plurality of electrically conductive patches disposed in a second linear array on the insulated substrate, and

a second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators comprising a respective second conical radiator coupled to each patch of the second plurality of electrically conductive patches.

8. The device of claim 7 wherein each second conical radiator is spaced apart a distance of approximately either 8.75 centimeters or 4.2 centimeters from one or more adjacent second conical radiators.

9. The device of claim 7 wherein a diameter of a base of one or more second conical radiators of the second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators is approximately either 5 centimeters or 2.4 centimeters.

10. The device of claim 7 further including a feed connector electrically coupled to one or more second conical radiators of the second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the feed connector is electrically coupled to a radio.

12. The device of claim 11 wherein an access point is electronically coupled to the feed connector.

13. The device of claim 7 , wherein each second conical radiator of the second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators comprises a substantially conical portion, a first cylindrical portion disposed annularly about a base of the substantially conical portion, and a second cylindrical portion disposed about a truncated end of the substantially conical portion.

14. The device of claim 7 , wherein relative spacing among the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators and the second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators, as well as a quantity of the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators and a quantity of the second plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators, are selected to effectuate a predetermined radiation pattern.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein each conical radiator of the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators comprises a substantially conical portion, a first cylindrical portion disposed annularly about a base of the substantially conical portion, and a second cylindrical portion disposed about a truncated end of the substantially conical portion.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the second cylindrical portion comprises an aperture having an unbroken circumference.

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein the second cylindrical portion of each conical radiator is physically connected to a respective patch of the plurality of electrically conductive patches.

18. The device of claim 1 , wherein sizes of the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators and sizes of the plurality of electrically conductive patches are selected to effectuate a predetermined radiation pattern.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein spacing between the plurality of three-dimensional conical radiators are selected to effectuate a predetermined radiation pattern.

20. The device of claim 1 , wherein, for each patch, a size of the patch is selected to be approximately the same as a maximum diameter of the respective conical radiator that is coupled to the patch.
