Abstract

Surgical stapling apparatus are disclosed including an anvil having a working surface with a shaped topography; and a staple cartridge, in juxtaposition with the anvil. The staple cartridge includes a working surface with shaped topography which is complementary to the shaped topography of the working surface of the shaped anvil. When the anvil and the staple cartridge are approximated with or toward one another, at least a portion of the working surface of the anvil cooperates with at least a portion of the working surface of the staple cartridge to enhance alignment of the staple cartridge and the anvil in at least one of a transverse and longitudinal direction.

Claims (9)

1. A laparoscopic surgical stapling apparatus, comprising:

an elongated shaft;

an end effector having a width and a length, the width extending from a first side of the end effector to a second side of the end effector, the length defining a longitudinal axis, the end effector including an anvil having a working surface that defines staple forming depressions, the end effector having a staple cartridge with a working surface defining retention slots that support surgical staples, the staple cartridge and anvil being movable with respect to one another to approximate the staple cartridge and anvil so that the working surface of the staple cartridge and the working surface of the anvil are sufficiently close to each other that staples can be fired from the slots of the staple cartridge and properly formed in the depressions of the anvil, the end effector being attached to the elongated shaft, the anvil having a longitudinally running row of detents formed in the working surface and the staple cartridge having a longitudinally running row of projections, the detents and projections engaging tissue when the anvil and staple cartridge are relatively moved to approximate the staple cartridge and anvil, the projections extending continuously along the width of the end effector from the first side to the second side of the end effector.

2. The stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the working surface of the anvil is an undulating bottom surface.

3. The stapling apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the working surface of the staple cartridge is an undulating top surface.

4. The stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the working surface of the staple cartridge and the working surface of the anvil are shaped working surfaces.

5. The stapling apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the shaped working surface of the staple cartridge and the shaped working surface of the anvil are complementary.

6. The stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the staple cartridge includes a channel.

7. The stapling apparatus according to claim 6 , further comprising a knife, the knife being accommodated by the channel.
