Abstract

The present invention provides methods for uniform growth of nanostructures such as nanotubes (e.g., carbon nanotubes) on the surface of a substrate, wherein the long axes of the nanostructures may be substantially aligned. The nanostructures may be further processed for use in various applications, such as composite materials. For example, a set of aligned nanostructures may be formed and transferred, either in bulk or to another surface, to another material to enhance the properties of the material. In some cases, the nanostructures may enhance the mechanical properties of a material, for example, providing mechanical reinforcement at an interface between two materials or plies. In some cases, the nanostructures may enhance thermal and/or electronic properties of a material. The present invention also provides systems and methods for growth of nanostructures, including batch processes and continuous processes.

Claims (11)

1. A method of forming a composite article, comprising:

transferring nanostructures from a substantially planar surface of a first substrate to a non-planar surface of a second substrate such that the nanostructures are removed from the first substrate, the nanostructures are arranged on or in a joining surface of the second substrate such that the nanostructures are dispersed uniformly on or in at least 10% of the joining surface of the second substrate, and the nanostructures are substantially aligned on or in the joining surface of the second substrate; and

binding the second substrate to a third substrate via the joining surface of the second substrate and a joining surface of the third substrate to form an interface of the second and third substrates, wherein the interface comprises the set of substantially aligned nanostructures,

wherein at least some of the nanostructures penetrate the joining surface of the second substrate and the joining surface of the third substrate.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the nanostructures are nanotubes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the nanostructures are carbon nanotubes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second substrate comprises a fiber, a tow of fibers, and/or a weave.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second substrate comprises a prepreg.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third substrate comprises a fiber, a tow of fibers, and/or a weave.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transferring comprises transfer of the nanostructures from the substantially planar surface of the first substrate to a substantially cylindrical surface of the second substrate.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the joining surface of the second substrate contacts the joining surface of the third substrate.
