Abstract

A low-floor electric bus includes a plurality of battery packs mounted under the floor of such that the floor inside the bus between a front axle and a rear axle of the bus is substantially flat. Each battery pack may include an enclosure and multiple battery modules positioned within the enclosure. And, each battery module may include a plurality of battery cells electrically connected together.

Claims (32)

1. A low-floor electric bus comprising:

a bus body comprising a skeletal frame made of an aluminum material;

a floor made of an aluminum material, wherein a bottom surface of the floor includes one or more cavities; and

one or more battery packs mounted in the one or more cavities below the floor from a side of the bus such that the floor inside the bus in an area that extends an entire width of the bus between a front axle and a rear axle of the bus is substantially flat,

wherein at least a portion of each of the one or more battery packs are exposed on an underside of the electric bus.

2. The low-floor electric bus of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs has a height of 8 inches or less.

3. The low-floor electric bus of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs comprises a watertight box made from a composite material that does not oxidize when exposed to an electric arc.

4. The low-floor electric bus of claim 3 , wherein the one or more battery packs comprise lithium ion battery packs.

5. The low-floor electric bus of claim 4 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs includes a cooling plate adapted to cool the battery pack.

6. The low-floor electric bus of claim 5 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs is fluidly coupled to a cooling system of the bus.

7. An electric vehicle comprising:

a bus body comprising a skeletal frame made of an aluminum material;

a floor made of an aluminum material, wherein a bottom surface of the floor includes one or more cavities; and

one or more battery packs mounted in the one or more cavities below the floor from a side of the electric vehicle and at least partially exposed on an underside of the electric vehicle such that the floor inside the electric vehicle in an area that extends an entire width of the bus between a front axle and a rear axle of the electric vehicle is substantially flat,

wherein the one or more battery packs are mounted such that the electric vehicle has a low floor chassis with substantially no compromise in an interior seating layout of the electric vehicle.

8. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the electric vehicle is one of the following: a transit bus, a school bus, a package delivery van, a shuttle bus, a class 5-8 truck, or a tractor trailer.

9. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs has a height of 8 inches or less.

10. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs comprises a watertight box made from a composite material that does not oxidize when exposed to an electric arc.

11. The electric vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the one or more battery packs comprise lithium ion battery packs.

12. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs includes a cooling plate adapted to cool the battery pack.

13. The electric vehicle of claim 12 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs is fluidly coupled to a cooling system of the electric vehicle.

14. A low-floor electric vehicle comprising:

a bus body comprising a skeletal frame made of an aluminum material;

a floor made of an aluminum material, wherein a bottom surface of the floor includes one or more cavities; and

one or more lithium ion battery packs mounted in the one or more cavities below the floor from a side of the electric vehicle and at least partially exposed on an underside of the vehicle such that the floor inside the bus in an area that extends an entire width of the electric vehicle between a front axle and a rear axle of the electric vehicle is substantially flat,

wherein each of the lithium ion battery packs is mounted in a separate compartment within the floor of the bus, and wherein each of the mounted lithium ion battery packs is physically isolated from another mounted lithium battery pack.

15. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the electric vehicle is one of the following: a transit bus, a school bus, a package delivery van, a shuttle bus, a class 5-8 truck, or a tractor trailer.

16. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 15 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs has a height of 8 inches or less.

17. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 15 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs comprises a watertight box made from a composite material.

18. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the watertight box made of composite material does not oxidize when exposed to an electric arc.

19. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 18 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs includes a cooling plate adapted to cool the battery pack.

20. The low-floor electric vehicle of claim 19 , wherein each of the one or more battery packs is fluidly coupled to a cooling system of the electric vehicle.
