Abstract

A cartridge detachably mountable to a main assembly of an electrophotographic image forming apparatus, the cartridge includes (i) a rotatable developing roller for developing a latent image formed on a photosensitive member; (ii) a first drive transmission member capable of receiving a rotational force originated by the main assembly; (iii) a second drive transmission member capable of coupling with the first drive transmission member and capable of transmitting the rotational force received by the first drive transmission member to the developing roller; and (iv) a coupling disconnection member including a force receiving portion capable of receiving the force originated by the main assembly, and an urging portion capable of urging at least one of the first drive transmission member and the second drive transmission member by the force received by the force receiving portion to separate one of the first drive transmission member and the second drive transmission member from the other, thereby disconnecting the coupling.

Claims (92)

1. A process cartridge comprising:

(i) a frame;

(ii) a photosensitive drum rotatably supported in the frame;

(iii) a developing roller for developing a latent image on the photosensitive drum, the developing roller being rotatably supported in the frame; and

(iv) a clutch including:

(iv-i) a first drive transmission member capable of receiving a rotational force;

(iv-ii) a second drive transmission member capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the developing roller; and

(iv-iii) a lever movable relative to the frame between a first position and a second position in a state that the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum,

wherein the clutch is capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member when the lever is in the first position, and the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member when the lever is in the second position.

2. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising a transmission gear configured to transmit the rotational force from the second drive transmission member to the developing roller.

3. A process cartridge according to claim 2 , wherein the first drive transmission member and the second drive transmission member are coaxially aligned with the transmission gear.

4. A process cartridge according to claim 2 , wherein at least a part of the clutch is disposed inside the transmission gear.

5. A process cartridge according to claim 2 , wherein at least a part of the second drive transmission member is disposed inside the transmission gear.

6. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the lever is rotatable between the first position and the second position.

7. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the clutch includes a cam for separating the first drive transmission member and the second drive transmission member from each other when the lever is in the second position.

A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the first transmission member includes an engagement portion, and the second transmission member includes an engagement portion for receiving the rotational force from the engagement portion of the first transmission member by engaging with the engagement portion of the first engagement member, and

wherein the engagement portion of the first transmission member and the engagement portion of the second transmission member are separated from each other when the lever is in the second position.

9. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a first frame rotatably supporting the photosensitive drum and a second frame rotatably supporting the developing roller.

10. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the lever projects downward when the developing roller and the photosensitive drum are positioned on a downward side of the process cartridge.

11. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising a drive inputting portion capable of receiving the driving force by engaging with a main assembly side drive transmission member provided in a main assembly of an image forming apparatus,

wherein the first transmission member is capable of receiving the driving force from the drive inputting portion.

12. A process cartridge according to claim 11 , wherein the first drive transmission member is provided with the drive inputting portion.

13. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the first drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

14. A process cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the second drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

15. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprising:

a main assembly of the electrophotographic image forming apparatus; and

a process cartridge according to claim 1 .

16. A process cartridge comprising:

(i) a photosensitive drum;

(ii) a developing roller for developing a latent image on the photosensitive drum;

(iii) a drive inputting portion for receiving a rotational force for rotating the developing roller;

(iv) an urging force receiving portion for receiving an urging force; and

(vi) a clutch for transmitting the rotational force received by the drive inputting portion to the developing roller,

wherein the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force to the developing roller, in response to reception of the urging force by the urging force receiving portion, in a state where the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum.

17. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , further comprising a transmission gear configured to transmit the rotational force from the clutch to the developing roller.

18. A process cartridge according to claim 17 , wherein at least a part of the clutch is disposed inside the transmission gear.

19. A process cartridge according to claim 17 , wherein the clutch includes:

a first drive transmission member capable of receiving the rotational force from the drive inputting portion; and

a second drive transmission member capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the developing roller,

wherein the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member, in response to the reception of the urging force by the urging force receiving portion, in a state that the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum, and

wherein at least a part of the second drive transmission member is disposed inside the transmission gear.

20. A process cartridge according to claim 17 , wherein the transmission gear is coaxially aligned with a drive inputting portion.

21. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the clutch includes:

a first drive transmission member for receiving the rotational force from a drive inputting portion; and

a second drive transmission member capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the developing roller,

wherein the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member, in response to the reception of the urging force by the urging force receiving portion, in the state that the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum.

22. A process cartridge according to claim 21 , wherein the first drive transmission member is provided with the drive inputting portion.

A process cartridge according to claim 21 , wherein the first transmission member includes an engagement portion, and the second transmission member includes an engagement portion for receiving the rotational force from the engagement portion of the first transmission member by engaging with the engagement portion of the first engagement member, and

wherein the engagement portion of the first transmission member and the engagement portion of the second transmission member are separated from each other in response to the reception of the urging force by the urging force receiving portion.

24. A process cartridge according to claim 21 , wherein the first drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

25. A process cartridge according to claim 21 , wherein the second drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

26. A process cartridge according to claim 21 , wherein the clutch includes a cam for separating the first transmission member and the second transmission member from each other in response to the reception of the urging force by the urging force receiving portion.

27. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the urging force receiving portion is positioned on a downward side of the process cartridge when the developing roller and the photosensitive drum are positioned on the downward side of the process cartridge.

28. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the process cartridge is detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, and

wherein the drive inputting portion is capable of receiving the rotational force by engaging with a main assembly side drive transmission member provided in the main assembly, and the urging force receiving portion is capable of receiving the urging force by contacting an urging member provided in the main assembly.

29. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the frame includes a first frame rotatably supporting the photosensitive drum and a second frame rotatably supporting the developing roller.

30. A process cartridge according to claim 16 , wherein the urging force receiving portion is movable relative to the photosensitive drum from a first position to a second position by receiving the urging force in the state that the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum, and

wherein the clutch is capable of transmitting the rotational force to the developing roller when the urging portion is in the first position, and the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force to the developing roller when the urging portion is in the second position.

31. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprising:

a main assembly of the electrophotographic image forming apparatus; and

a process cartridge according to claim 16 .

32. A process cartridge comprising:

(i) a photosensitive drum;

(ii) a developing roller for developing a latent image on the photosensitive drum;

(iii) a drive inputting portion for receiving a rotational force for rotating the developing roller;

(iv) an urging force receiving portion for receiving an urging force, the urging force receiving portion being movable between a first position and a second position in a state that the developing roller contacts the photosensitive drum; and

(vi) a clutch capable of transmitting the rotational force received by the drive inputting portion to the developing roller when the urging force receiving portion is in the first position, and the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force to the developing roller when the urging force receiving portion is in the second position.

33. A process cartridge according to claim 32 , further comprising a transmission gear configured to transmit the rotational force from the clutch to the developing roller.

34. A process cartridge according to claim 33 , wherein at least a part of the clutch is disposed inside the transmission gear.

35. A process cartridge according to claim 33 , wherein the clutch includes:

a first drive transmission member capable of receiving the rotational force from the drive inputting portion; and

a second drive transmission member capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the developing roller,

wherein the clutch is capable of preventing the transmission of the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member when the urging force receiving portion is in the second position, and

wherein at least a part of the second drive transmission member is disposed inside the transmission gear.

36. A process cartridge according to claim 33 , wherein the transmission gear is coaxially aligned with the drive inputting portion.

37. A process cartridge according to claim 32 , wherein the clutch includes:

a first drive transmission member for receiving the rotational force from the drive inputting portion; and

a second drive transmission member capable of transmitting the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the developing roller,

wherein the clutch is capable of preventing transmission of the rotational force from the first drive transmission member to the second drive transmission member when the urging force receiving portion is in the second position.

38. A process cartridge according to claim 37 , wherein the first drive transmission member is provided with the drive inputting portion.

A process cartridge according to claim 37 , wherein the first transmission member includes an engagement portion, and the second transmission member includes an engagement portion for receiving the rotational force from the engagement portion of the first transmission member by engaging with the engagement portion of the first engagement member, and

wherein the engagement portion of the first transmission member and the engagement portion of the second transmission member are separated from each other when the urging force receiving portion is in the second position.

40. A process cartridge according to claim 37 , wherein the first drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

41. A process cartridge according to claim 37 , wherein the second drive transmission member is movable along a rotational axis thereof.

42. A process cartridge according to claim 37 , wherein the clutch includes a cam for separating the first transmission member and the second transmission member from each other when the urging force receiving portion in in the second position.

43. A process cartridge according to claim 32 , wherein the urging force receiving portion is positioned on a downward side of the process cartridge when the developing roller and the photosensitive drum are positioned on the downward side of the process cartridge.

44. A process cartridge according to claim 32 , wherein the process cartridge is detachably mountable to a main assembly of an image forming apparatus, and

wherein the drive inputting portion is capable of receiving the rotational force by engaging with a main assembly side drive transmission member provided in the main assembly, and the urging force receiving portion is capable of receiving the urging force by contacting an urging member provided in the main assembly.

45. A process cartridge according to claim 32 , wherein the frame includes a first frame rotatably supporting the photosensitive drum and a second frame rotatably supporting the developing roller.

46. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus comprising:

a main assembly of the electrophotographic image forming apparatus; and

a process cartridge according to claim 32 .
