Abstract

An electrical device, such as a power tool, includes a first battery pack receptacle configured to receive a first battery pack and a second battery pack receptacle configured to receive a second battery pack. The second battery pack is electrically connected in a series-type configuration with the first battery pack. The electrical device also includes circuitry with an electronic processor. The circuitry is configured to alter a first signal output from the electronic processor to at least one selected from a group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack, and to alter a second signal received by the electronic processor from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

Claims (52)

1. An electrical device comprising:

a first battery pack receptacle configured to receive a first battery pack;

a second battery pack receptacle configured to receive a second battery pack, the second battery pack electrically connected in a series-type configuration with the first battery pack; and

circuitry including a first microprocessor, the circuitry configured to:

alter a voltage of a first signal output from the first microprocessor to at least one selected from a group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack to produce a first altered signal based on the first signal, and

alter a voltage of a second signal received by the first microprocessor from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack to produce a second altered signal based on the second signal.

2. The electrical device of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry further includes bypass circuitry bypassing the second battery pack receptacle.

3. The electrical device of claim 2 , wherein the bypass circuitry includes a diode.

4. The electrical device of claim 1 , further comprising a motor configured to receive power from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

5. The electrical device of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry comprises:

a first level-shifter configured to alter the voltage of the first signal output from the first microprocessor to at least one selected from a group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack, and

a second level-shifter configured to alter the voltage of the second signal received by the first microprocessor from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

6. The electrical device of claim 5 , further comprising a motor configured to receive power from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

7. The electrical device of claim 6 , wherein the circuitry further includes bypass circuitry bypassing the second battery pack receptacle.

8. The electrical device of claim 7 , wherein the bypass circuitry includes a diode.

9. The electrical device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a housing,

wherein the circuitry is included within the housing.

10. The electrical device according to claim 1 ,

including the first battery pack physically and electrically connected to the first battery pack receptacle and the second battery pack physically and electrically connected to the second battery pack receptacle,

wherein:

the first battery pack includes a second microprocessor configured to communicate with the first microprocessor, and

the second battery pack includes a third microprocessor configured to communicate with the first microprocessor.

11. An electrical device system comprising:

a device housing including

a first battery pack receptacle, and

a first microprocessor; and

an adapter configured to be received by the first battery pack receptacle, the adapter including

a second battery pack receptacle configured to receive a first battery pack,

a third battery pack receptacle configured to receive a second battery pack, and

circuitry configured to:

alter a voltage of a first signal output from the first microprocessor to at least one selected from a group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack to produce a first altered signal based on the first signal, and

alter a voltage of a second signal received by the first microprocessor from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack to produce a second altered signal based on the second signal.

12. The electrical device system of claim 11 , wherein the circuitry further includes bypass circuitry bypassing the second battery pack receptacle.

13. The electrical device system of claim 12 , wherein the bypass circuitry includes a diode.

14. The electrical device system of claim 11 , wherein the device housing further includes a motor configured to receive power from at least one selected from the group consisting of the first battery pack and the second battery pack.

15. The electrical device system of claim 11 ,

including the first battery pack physically and electrically connected to the second battery pack receptacle and the second battery pack physically and electrically connected to the third battery pack receptacle,

wherein:

the first battery pack includes a second microprocessor configured to communicate with the first microprocessor, and

the second battery pack includes a third microprocessor configured to communicate with the first microprocessor.

16. An electrical device comprising:

a main body having a first microprocessor;

a first battery pack receptacle configured to receive a first battery pack;

a first battery pack having an output voltage and a second microprocessor, the first battery pack being physically and electrically connected to the first battery pack receptacle;

a second battery pack receptacle configured to receive a second battery pack;

a second battery pack having a third microprocessor, the second battery pack being physically and electrically connected to the second battery pack receptacle in series with the first battery pack such that the output voltage of the first battery pack is a reference voltage of the second battery pack; and

circuitry configured to:

raise a voltage of a first signal output from the first microprocessor to the third microprocessor to produce a first altered signal based on the first signal, and

lower a voltage of a second signal received by the first microprocessor from the third microprocessor to produce a second altered signal based on the second signal.

17. The electrical device according to claim 16 , wherein the circuitry is located in the main body.

18. The electrical device according to claim 16 , wherein the circuitry, the first battery pack receptacle and the second battery pack receptacle are located in an adapter that is removably connected to the main body.
