Infant calming/sleep-aid, SIDS prevention device, and method of use
An infant calming/sleep-aid/SIDS detection device is provided that includes a main moving platform that moves in a variable manner with accompanying variable sound generation, the sound and motion adapted to calm a fussy baby, induce sleep, and maintain sleep under normal conditions. The device may also have a sensor for detection of pauses in breathing and/or detection of resultant biological changes related to breathing pauses and respond with appropriate stimuli to arouse the baby and allow breathing to recommence.
1. A method comprising:
providing a sleep device comprising a platform for supporting an infant, a motor operable to impart motion to the platform, a control system operable to control the motion of the platform, and an attachment mechanism for removably attaching a sleep sack to the sleep device to securely position the infant held within the sleep sack on the platform;
detecting with a first sensor if the sleep sack is securely attached to the sleep device via the attachment mechanism, wherein the control system discontinues or does not initiate the motion of the platform when the first sensor does not detect the sleep sack to be securely attached with the attachment mechanism;
monitoring the infant with a second sensor that generates a status signal indicative of at least one of a motor status of the infant or a physiologic status of the infant;
receiving, by the control system, the status signal;
determining, by the control system, based on the status signal, if the infant is in a distressed state; and
generating, by the control system, at least one control output that controls at least one of the motion of the platform or a sound directed to the infant from a speaker if the infant is determined to be in the distressed state.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distressed state is detected if a physiologic or motor perturbation of the infant is detected that is greater than an acceptable baseline.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distressed state is detected if a pause in breathing of the infant is detected that is greater than a predetermined duration.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distressed state is detected if a heart rate of the infant falls below a predetermined threshold.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control output further controls an alarm directed to caregivers of the infant.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising initiating an emergency call in response to the at least one control output.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control output controls both the motion of the platform and the sound directed to the infant from the speaker such that the control output causes a vigorous reciprocating motion of the platform and a loud sound to be directed to the infant from the speaker.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the vigorous reciprocating motion of the platform has a frequency that is greater than 0.5 Hz and an amplitude that is greater than 1 inch.
9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the loud sound has an intensity of at least 65 dB.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the attachment mechanism includes two clips that attach to attachment pieces of the sleep sack, and wherein the first sensor is associated with the two clips and acts to detect when the attachment pieces of the sleep sack are in place in the two clips to indicate the sleep sack is securely attached with the attachment mechanism.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the control system continues or initiates the motion of the platform only when the attachment pieces of the sleep sack are detected as being properly attached to each clip.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a contact switch or an optical switch.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when the first sensor does not detect the sleep sack to be securely attached with the attachment mechanism, the control system is operable to control sound output from the speaker.
14. A method comprising:
providing a sleep device comprising a platform for supporting an infant, a motor operable to impart motion to the platform, a control system operable to control the motion of the platform, and an attachment mechanism for removably attaching a sleep sack to the sleep device to securely position the infant within the sleep sack on the platform;
detecting with a first sensor if the sleep sack is securely attached to the sleep device via the attachment mechanism, wherein the control system discontinues or does not initiate the motion of the platform when the first sensor does not detect the sleep sack to be securely attached with the attachment mechanism;
monitoring the infant with a second sensor that generates a status signal indicative of at least one of a respiration status or a cardiovascular status of the infant;
receiving, by the control system, the status signal;
determining, by the control system, based on the status signal, if the infant is in a distressed state; and generating, by the control system, at least one control output that controls at least one of the motion of the platform or a sound directed to the infant from a speaker if the infant is determined to be in the distressed state.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the attachment mechanism includes two clips that attach to attachment pieces of the sleep sack, and wherein the first sensor is associated with the two clips and acts to detect when the attachment pieces of the sleep sack are in place in the two clips to indicate the sleep sack is securely attached with the attachment mechanism.
16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the control system continues or initiates the motion of the platform only when the attachment pieces of the sleep sack are detected as being properly attached to each clip.
17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first sensor comprises a contact switch or an optical switch.
18. The method of claim 14 , wherein, when the first sensor does not detect the sleep sack to be securely attached with the attachment mechanism, the control system is operable to control sound output from the speaker.
