Abstract

An adjustable reformer for exercising is provided. The reformer includes a frame, a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame, and at least one resistance element connected to the carriage. A cord connects the carriage to at least one lower guide and at least one upper guide. Pulling the cord causes movement of the carriage along the frame against resistance provided by the resistance element. The guides can be height adjustable. The reformer can include a cord retraction system. Related methods of exercise are also provided.

Claims (74)

1. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate to the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame at a position proximate to the first end of the horizontal frame;

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame, the upper guide adjustable to a height that is at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame;

f) a cord connecting the carriage, the lower guide, and the upper guide;

g) a track extending along the vertical frame and having a plurality of apertures at different heights; and

h) a slider for mounting the upper guide to the track, the slider including a pin for engaging the plurality of apertures on the track to position the upper guide at the different heights.

2. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the upper guide is adjustable to a height that is up to about 1.5 meters above the horizontal frame.

3. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly proximate the first end of the horizontal frame;

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame and securable to the frame at any one of a plurality of different heights above the lower guide, at least one of the different heights being at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame; and

f) a cord connecting the carriage, the lower guide, and the upper guide for pulling by a user to urge the carriage to slide along the horizontal frame;

wherein the lower guide is positioned laterally offset relative to the upper guide such that the cord slants laterally outwardly from the lower guide to the upper guide.

4. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly proximate the first end of the horizontal frame;

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame and securable to the frame at any one of a plurality of different heights above the lower guide, at least one of the different heights being at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame; and

f) a cord connecting the carriage, the lower guide, and the upper guide for pulling by a user to urge the carriage to slide along the horizontal frame;

wherein a vertical track extends along the vertical frame, and wherein a guide mount connects the upper guide to the vertical frame, the guide mount comprising a slider slidably coupled to the track for vertically translating the upper guide to the different heights.

The reformer of claim 4 , wherein the cord has a proximal portion connected to the carriage, extends in a generally horizontal direction from the proximal portion to the lower guide, passes through the lower guide, extends generally upwardly from the lower guide to the upper guide, passes through the upper guide, and has a distal portion extending from the upper guide for pulling by the user to translate the carriage along the horizontal frame relative to the lower and upper guides.

The reformer of claim 4 , wherein the frame assembly includes a plurality of vertically spaced apart apertures along the vertical frame, and wherein the guide mount has a pin engageable with any one of the apertures for securing the upper guide at any one of the different heights along the frame.

7. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly proximate the first end of the horizontal frame;

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame and securable to the frame at any one of a plurality of different heights above the lower guide, at least one of the different heights being at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame; and

f) a cord connecting the carriage, the lower guide, and the upper guide for pulling by a user to urge the carriage to slide along the horizontal frame;

wherein the lower guide is adjustably mounted to the vertical frame for adjusting a height of the lower guide.

8. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly at a position proximate the first end of the horizontal frame; and

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame at an elevation above the lower guide, the upper guide adjustable to a height of at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame, and the upper guide, lower guide, and carriage connectable through a cord extending from a first end for connection to the carriage, through the lower and upper guides, and to a second end extending from the upper guide for pulling by the user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame;

wherein the lower guide is mounted to a telescopic post on a swivel.

9. The reformer of claim 8 , wherein a vertical track extends along the vertical frame and a slider connects the upper guide to the track for vertically translating the upper guide along the track.

10. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly at a position proximate the first end of the horizontal frame; and

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame at an elevation above the lower guide, the upper guide adjustable to a height of at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame, and the upper guide, lower guide, and carriage connectable through a cord extending from a first end for connection to the carriage, through the lower and upper guides, and to a second end extending from the upper guide for pulling by the user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame;

wherein the lower guide is positioned laterally offset relative to the upper guide such that the cord slants from the lower guide to the upper guide.

11. The reformer of claim 10 , wherein a vertical track extends along the vertical frame and a slider connects the upper guide to the track for vertically translating the upper guide along the track.

12. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly at a position proximate the first end of the horizontal frame; and

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame at an elevation above the lower guide, the upper guide adjustable to a height of at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame, and the upper guide, lower guide, and carriage connectable through a cord extending from a first end for connection to the carriage, through the lower and upper guides, and to a second end extending from the upper guide for pulling by the user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame;

wherein the lower guide is adjustably mounted to the vertical frame for adjusting a height of the lower guide.

13. The reformer of claim 12 , wherein the upper guide is mounted to the vertical frame on a swivel.

14. The reformer of claim 12 , wherein the lower guide is mounted to the vertical frame on a swivel.

15. The reformer of claim 12 , wherein the vertical frame comprises a slot and the upper guide is mounted to the slot of the vertical frame.

16. The reformer of claim 12 , wherein the frame assembly includes a plurality of vertically spaced apart apertures along the vertical frame, and wherein a guide mount connects the upper guide to the vertical frame, the guide mount having a pin engageable with any one of the apertures for securing the upper guide at different heights along the vertical frame.

17. The reformer of claim 12 , wherein a vertical track extends along the vertical frame and a slider connects the upper guide to the track for vertically translating the upper guide along the track.

18. A reformer comprising:

a) a frame assembly including a horizontal frame having first and second ends, and a vertical frame secured to the horizontal frame proximate the first end and extending upward from the horizontal frame;

b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;

c) a resistance element attached to the carriage for biasing the carriage to an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;

d) at least one lower guide mounted to the frame assembly at a position proximate the first end of the horizontal frame;

e) at least one upper guide adjustably mounted to the vertical frame at an elevation above the lower guide, the upper guide adjustable to a height of at least 0.5 meters above the horizontal frame, and the upper guide, lower guide, and carriage connectable through a cord extending from a first end for connection to the carriage, through the lower and upper guides, and to a second end extending from the upper guide for pulling by the user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame;

f) a track extending along the vertical frame and having a plurality of apertures at different heights; and

g) a slider for mounting the upper guide to the track, the slider including a pin for engaging the plurality of apertures on the track to position the upper guide at the different heights.

19. The reformer of claim 18 , wherein the upper guide is adjustable to a height of 1.5 meters above the horizontal frame.

20. The reformer of claim 18 , wherein the upper guide is adjustable to a height such that the equilibrium position of the carriage is located at a downward angle that is at least 25 degrees from horizontal relative to the upper guide.
