Topical skin care formulations comprising plant extracts
A method for treating a person's skin is disclosed. The method includes topically applying to the skin a composition comprising from 0.001% to 20% by weight of an aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic extract from a plant extract.
1. A method for treating loose and/or sagging skin in a person's skin in need thereof, the method comprising topically applying to loose and/or sagging skin a composition comprising:
an effective amount of a Syzygium cumini extract;
jojoba oil;
a wax; and
a preservative,
wherein the Syzygium cumini extract is an aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic extract from Syzygium cumini , and
wherein the effective amount of the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract reduces matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) activity in the skin and treats loose and/or sagging skin.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the skin in need thereof comprises a fine line or wrinkle.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition increases the firmness of the skin.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an emulsion.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the composition is an oil-in-water emulsion.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a cream or a lotion.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a solution.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a gel.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is anhydrous.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract reduces oxidation in the skin.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises 0.001% to 20%, by weight, of the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition comprises 0.001% to 5%, by weight, of the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises:
water;
a chelating agent;
an additional moisturizing agent;
and
a thickening agent.
14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the skin in need thereof is dry skin, and the composition moisturizes the skin.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the composition further comprises avocado ( Persea gratissima ) oil.
16. A method of treating loose and/or sagging skin in a person's skin in need thereof, the method comprising topically applying to loose and/or sagging skin a composition comprising:
a Syzygium cumini extract;
avocado ( Persea gratissima ) oil;
water;
shea butter;
stearyl alcohol;
behenyl alcohol;
glyceryl stearate;
glycerin;
lecithin or hydrogenated lecithin; and
sodium hyaluronate,
wherein the Syzygium cumini extract is an aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic extract from Syzygium cumini , and
wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract reduces matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) activity in the skin and treats loose and/or sagging skin.
17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the water is present in an amount from 35-80% by weight.
18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract is a lyophilized extract in powdered form.
19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract is from the whole plant of Syzygium cumini.
20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract is from the fruit of Syzygium cumini.
21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Syzygium cumini extract is an alcoholic extract and the alcoholic extract is an ethanolic extract.
22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Syzygium cumini extract is an aqueous-alcoholic extract and the aqueous-alcoholic extract is and aqueous-ethanolic extract.
23. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises:
cetyl palmitate;
green tea extract; and
methylparaben.
24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises:
water;
glycerin;
shea butter;
coconut oil;
beeswax;
sunflower seed oil
phenoxyethanol;
dimethicone;
carbomer; and
vitamin E.
25. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wax comprises beeswax.
26. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous-alcoholic Syzygium cumini extract is a powdered extract.
