Abstract

A cable-stranding apparatus includes a stationary guide, a motor, a driven guide, and a controller electrically coupled to the motor. The stationary guide is configured to guide strand elements in a spaced-apart configuration and to pass a core member. The motor is operatively associated with a guide driver. The driven guide is disposed at least partially within the guide driver so as to rotate therewith. The driven guide is configured to receive the strand elements from the stationary guide, individually guide the strand elements received from the stationary guide, and to further pass the core member. The controller is electrically coupled to the motor and configured to control the rotational speed and direction of the motor.

Claims (20)

1. An SZ cable-forming system comprising:

a plurality of strand storage containers, each container holding a cable strand element;

a strand guide device for collecting and distributing the plurality of cable stranding elements;

an SZ cable-stranding apparatus comprising:

a rotatable drive shaft defining an axial shaft hole therein;

a guide member disposed in the axial shaft hole, wherein the guide member is fixed to the drive shaft so as to rotate therewith; and

a positional feedback device that provides information about the rotational position of the guide member; and

inductively-driven rotors that surround and are configured to drive rotation of the drive shaft;

wherein the SZ-cable stranding apparatus is configured to receive the plurality of cable strand elements from the strand guide device and perform SZ-stranding of the plurality of cable strand elements to form an SZ-stranded assembly; and

a coating unit configured to receive the SZ-stranded assembly from the SZ cable-stranding apparatus.

2. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 1 , wherein the guide member is configured to receive and individually guide the plurality of cable strand elements.

3. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 2 , wherein the guide member defines a plurality of guide holes for receiving the plurality of cable strand elements.

4. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of guide holes includes peripheral guide holes arranged symmetrically about a central hole.

5. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 4 , further comprising a core member, wherein the SZ-stranded assembly consists of the plurality of cable strand elements wound around the at least one core member in an SZ configuration.

6. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 1 , wherein the coating unit comprises an extrusion station configured to extrude a protective coating around the SZ-stranded assembly to form an SZ cable.

7. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 6 , wherein the coating unit further comprises a cooling and drying station to cool and dry the protective coating.

8. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 6 , further comprising a take-up unit configured to receive the SZ cable from the coating unit.

9. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 8 , further comprising a take-up spool, wherein the take-up unit tensions the SZ cable as the SZ cable winds around the take-up spool.

10. The SZ cable-forming system claim 1 , further comprising a controller electrically coupled to the SZ cable-stranding apparatus and configured to control the rotational speed and direction of the rotatable drive shaft.

11. The SZ cable-forming system of claim 10 , wherein the controller operates the SZ cable-stranding apparatus according to a rotation relationship that defines rotation speed and direction as a function of at least one of time and line speed.
