Abstract

A mounting device includes a panel portion, and a fastener receiving structure provided within a perimeter of the panel portion. The fastener receiving structure can include an aperture to receive an insertive fastener, and a flexure mechanism to enable at least a portion of the fastener receiving structure that includes the aperture to flex with insertion of the fastener in the aperture that attaches the panel portion against an underlying surface.

Claims (29)

1. A mounting device comprising:

a panel portion; and

a fastener receiving structure provided within a perimeter of the panel portion, the fastener receiving structure including a flexure mechanism that defines an aperture, the flexure mechanism enabling the fastener receiving structure to flex with insertion of a fastener in the aperture that attaches the panel portion to an underlying surface;

wherein the flexure mechanism comprises one or more flexure arms that flex to enable the flexure mechanism to flex upon insertion of the fastener, the one or more flexure arms extending from an interior perimeter interface of the panel portion to a ring structure that defines the aperture;

wherein the flexure mechanism comprises a failure rib attaching a specified flexure arm of the one or more flexure arms to the interior perimeter interface, the failure rib being structured to snap when the specified flexure arm flexes inward beyond a designated threshold during insertion of the fastener; and

wherein the designated threshold at which the failure rib snaps corresponds to an applied force that is below a force that would damage the panel portion.

2. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the flexure mechanism enables a portion of the fastener receiving structure to flex to accommodate the fastener being over-inserted into the aperture.

3. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the fastener receiving structure is separately formed from the panel portion.

4. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the ring structure travels inward along with the one or more flexure arms with insertion of the fastener.

5. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the failure rib is configured to provide an audible feedback when snapped.

6. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flexure arms comprise u-shaped flexure arms coupled to the ring structure.

7. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flexure arms comprise straight flexure arms extending laterally from the ring structure.

8. The mounting device of claim 1 , wherein the fastener receiving structure is formed of metal, and wherein the panel portion is formed from molded plastic.

9. The mounting device of claim 5 , wherein the failure rib is composed of a material to correlate to a predetermined depth of travel of the specified flexure arm.

10. The mounting device of claim 9 , wherein when the fastener is inserted into the ring structure, causing the specified flexure arm to flex to the predetermined depth of travel, the failure rib snaps to provide the audible feedback, and wherein the audible feedback signifies that an installer should stop inserting the fastener into the ring structure.

11. The mounting device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second fastener receiving structure provided within the perimeter of the panel portion, the second fastener receiving structure including a second flexure mechanism that defines a second aperture, the second flexure mechanism enabling the second fastener receiving structure to flex with insertion of a second fastener in the second aperture that attaches the panel portion to the underlying surface;

wherein the second flexure mechanism comprises one or more second flexure arms that flex to enable the second flexure mechanism to flex upon insertion of the second fastener, the one or more second flexure arms extending from the interior perimeter interface of the panel portion to a second ring structure that defines the second aperture.

12. A mounting device comprising:

a panel portion; and

a plurality of fastener receiving structures provided within a perimeter of the panel portion, each respective fastener receiving structure of the plurality of fastener receiving structures including a flexure mechanism that defines an aperture, the flexure mechanism enabling the respective fastener receiving structure to flex with insertion of a fastener in the aperture that attaches the panel portion to an underlying surface;

wherein the flexure mechanism comprises one or more flexure arms that flex to enable the flexure mechanism to flex upon insertion of the fastener, the one or more flexure arms extending from an interior perimeter interface of the panel portion to a ring structure that defines the aperture; and

wherein the flexure mechanism comprises a failure rib attaching a specified flexure arm of the one or more flexure arms to the interior perimeter interface, the failure rib being structured to snap when the specified flexure arm flexes inward beyond a designated threshold during insertion of the fastener, the failure rib being configured to provide an audible feedback when snapped and being composed of a material to correlate to a predetermined depth of travel of the specified flexure arm.

13. The mounting device of claim 12 , wherein the flexure mechanism enables a portion of the fastener receiving structure to flex to accommodate the fastener being over-inserted into the aperture.

14. The mounting device of claim 12 , wherein the respective fastener receiving structure is separately formed from the panel portion.

15. The mounting device of claim 12 , wherein the ring structure travels inward along with the one or more flexure arms with insertion of the fastener.

16. The mounting device of claim 12 , wherein the flexure mechanism comprises a failure rib attaching a specified flexure arm of the one or more flexure arms to the interior perimeter interface, the failure rib being structured to snap when the specified flexure arm flexes inward beyond a designated threshold during insertion of the fastener.

17. The mounting device of claim 16 , wherein the failure rib is configured to provide an audible feedback when snapped.

18. The mounting device of claim 12 , wherein the one or more flexure arms comprise u-shaped flexure arms coupled to the ring structure.
