Abstract

This disclosure provides an electrochemical cell electrode including a film layer deposited on an electrically conductive substrate. The film layer includes a concentration of carbon aggregates formed from a plurality of few layer graphene sheets orthogonally fused together. A porous structure is defined by the plurality of few layer graphene sheets and is configured to any provide for electrical conduction between contact points between any two or more of the plurality of few layer graphene sheets or host an electroactive material. The electrochemical cell electrode can be an anode. The electroactive material can include an elemental lithium (Li) interspersed in a D-spacing between adjacent few layer graphene sheets in the anode. An additional film can be deposited on the film. The film can be configured to provide a first electrical conductivity and the additional film can be configured to provide a second electrical conductivity different from the first electrical conductivity.

Claims (16)

1. An electrode of a lithium-based battery, the electrode comprising:

a plurality of carbon aggregates deposited as one or more films on an electrically conductive substrate, wherein a first group of the carbon aggregates has a relatively low concentration of carbon, a second group of the carbon aggregates has a relatively high concentration of carbon, and

the first and second groups of carbon aggregates collectively form a porous structure defined by few layer graphene (FLG) nanoplatelets orthogonally joined to each other; and

a plurality of pores formed in the porous structure, the plurality of pores configured to microconfine an electroactive material within the electrode.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the porous structure comprises mesoscale structuring or micron-scale fractal structuring.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pores formed within the porous structure is configured to receive a liquid electrolyte.

4. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the porous structure includes a plurality of interconnected channels, each of the interconnected channels further comprising:

a first portion configured to provide a Li ion conduit;

a second portion configured to facilitate rapid Li ion transport; and

a third portion configured to temporarily confine the electroactive material.

5. The electrode of claim 1 , further comprising a solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) formed within a vicinity of the porous structure.

6. The electrode of claim 1 , further comprising an artificial solid-electrolyte interface (ASEI) positioned within a vicinity of the porous structure.

7. The electrode of claim 6 , wherein the ASEI is formed in situ during formation of the porous structure.

8. The electrode of claim 6 , wherein the ASEI comprises one or more of a coating, a film, or a reactant.

9. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the porous structure includes one or more lithiophilically-functionalized surfaces.

10. The electrode of claim 9 , wherein the one or more lithiophilically-functionalized surfaces are configured to provide Li adsorption centers.
