Abstract

System and means soil stabilization and moisture control for building foundations including methods and systems for stabilization moisture in a site for building foundation by applying soil moisture stabilization material in various forms, a preferred stabilization material being a mixture of aluninosilicate Pozzolan mineral and granular material such as sand.

Claims (48)

1. A system, comprising:

a building slab comprising one or more concrete beams formed above one or more fluid delivery conduits, the fluid delivery conduits placed into position prior to pouring or placing the building slab; and

a liquid distribution system arranged to deliver a fluid to the one or more fluid delivery conduits located under one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building slab, wherein the liquid distribution system comprises:

the one or more fluid delivery conduits comprising one or more supply ends and one or more delivery ends, the one or more delivery ends of the one or more conduits located under the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building slab, wherein the one or more fluid delivery conduits direct a fluid from at least one of the one or more supply ends to at least one of the one or more delivery ends located under the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building slab.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the fluid delivery conduits are positioned in trenches formed prior to pouring or placing the building slab;

the system further comprises fill material, located in the trenches under at least some of the concrete beams of the building slab; and

at least some of the conduits are arranged to deliver liquid to the fill material located in the trenches.

The system of claim 2 , wherein the fill material comprises a soil moisture stabilization material that exhibits a moisture retention property that reduces expansion and contraction in volumetric areas under the concrete beams when incorporated into a soil in the volumetric areas under the concrete beams.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the fill material comprises a granular material to aid in dispersal of the liquid.

5. The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a moisture barrier placed around at least some of the fill material in at least some of the trenches.

6. The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a fluid delivery controller system comprising a controller and valves, the controller configured to control the valves to direct delivery of the fluid, via individual ones of the fluid delivery conduits, to different ones of the trenches volumetric areas located under one or more of the concrete beams of the building slab.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a soil moisture stabilization material, encased in flash spun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric, in at least some of the one or more volumetric areas located under the concrete beams of the building slab.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

preassembled barriers, placed in at least a portion of the one or more volumetric areas located at the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building slab.

9. A method, comprising:

installing prior to pouring or placing a corresponding building foundation slab comprising one or more concrete beams at a foundation site, a fluid delivery system comprising one or more fluid delivery conduits into position, wherein installing comprises placing the fluid delivery conduit in an arrangement that directs a fluid from a supply end of the fluid delivery conduit to one or more delivery ends of the fluid delivery conduit to be located under one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab; and

pouring or placing a building foundation slab comprising the one or more concrete beams at a foundation site.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

applying a soil moisture stabilization material to one or more areas under one or more locations for the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab.

11. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein

said installing the fluid delivery system comprises installing PVC pipe or drip irrigation tubing to supply the fluid to one or more areas at the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab.

12. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

prior to said pouring or placing the building foundation slab comprising the one or more concrete beams at the foundation site,

forming one or more vertical holes in one or more areas under locations for the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab, and placing a capillary conductive medium fill in the vertical holes; and

wherein said installing the fluid delivery system further comprises installing one or more vertical tubes coupled to the one or more fluid delivery conduits to deliver the fluid to respective ones of the vertical holes.

13. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

forming one or more areas at the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab, wherein forming comprises creating one or more vertical spaces, and placing a capillary conductive medium fill in the vertical spaces; and

wherein said installing the fluid delivery system comprises installing one or more vertical tubes coupled to horizontal fluid conduits to deliver the fluid to respective ones of the vertical spaces, wherein the vertical tubes comprise perforated vertical tubes with capped ends.

The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein said placing the fluid delivery conduit in the arrangement that directs the fluid to one or more areas at one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams comprises placing the fluid delivery conduit in one or more trenches in the arrangement that directs the fluid to the one or more delivery ends under at least some of the bases of the one or more concrete beams.

15. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

installing a moisture barrier in at least a portion of one or more trenches below a location for the building foundation slab; and

installing fill material in at least some of trenches below the location for the building foundation slab.

16. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

prior to said pouring or placing the building foundation slab comprising the one or more concrete beams at the foundation site,

installing preassembled barriers in at least a portion of one or more trenches below a location for the building foundation slab.

17. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising:

installing a fluid delivery controller system comprising a controller and valves, the controller configured to control the valves to direct delivery of the fluid, via individual ones of the fluid delivery conduit, to different ones of the one or more bases of the one or more concrete beams of the building foundation slab.

18. A preassembled barrier, comprising:

a flexible bag comprising:

one or more sides, or a bottom, made of a barrier material that acts as a liquid barrier, and

one or more other sides made of a porous material through which liquid will pass; and

the flexible bag filled with a moisture stabilizing fill;

wherein the flexible bag with the moisture stabilizing fill is configured for installation in a trench at the base of a location for one or more concrete beams of a building foundation slab.

19. The preassembled barrier in claim 18 , wherein the flexible bag is made, at least partially, of a material that decomposes over time when located in the trench.
