Abstract

A vascular remodeling device has a plurality of sections, sized for deployment in a blood vessel, that is radially expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state. Each section has a plurality of interconnected struts that define a waist, a proximal face, and a distal face. Each face comprises (i) a plurality of distal strut portions extending proximally from a distal side of the face, (ii) a plurality of proximal strut portions extending distally from a proximal side of the face, and (iii) a plurality of sub-struts, wherein, from each proximal strut portion, two of the sub-struts each extend to a different one of the distal strut portions.

Claims (18)

1. A method of retrieving vascular debris from a vasculature comprising:

inserting into the vasculature of a patient at least a portion of a sheath comprising a distal opening and encasing two or more segments expandable from a collapsed state to an expanded state, each segment having a waist comprising the radially largest region of the segment, a proximal longitudinal end, and a distal longitudinal end, wherein at least a first segment comprises:

a plurality of first proximal strut portions extending from the proximal longitudinal end;

a plurality of first distal strut portions extending proximally from the waist;

a plurality of first sub-struts having first and second ends, wherein every one of the first proximal strut portions, extending distally from the proximal longitudinal end, divides into the first ends of two of said plurality of first sub-struts, with the second ends of those two of said plurality of first sub-struts extending and connecting, respectively, to two different first distal strut portions;

a plurality of second distal strut portions extending proximally from the distal longitudinal end;

a plurality of second proximal strut portions each connected to a respective one of the first distal strut portions at the waist, wherein the first distal strut portions and the second proximal strut portions are each curved and connect to form a curving radial crest at the waist; and

a plurality of second sub-struts having first and second ends, wherein every one of the second proximal strut portions, extending distally from the waist, divides distally into the first ends of two of said plurality of second sub-struts, with the second ends of those two of said plurality of second sub-struts extending and connecting, respectively, to two different second distal strut portions;

releasing at least a portion of a segment outside the distal opening wherein at least a portion of the segment expands to engage the vascular debris; and

retrieving the segment and at least a portion of the vascular debris inside the sheath.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein retrieving the segment and at least a portion of the vascular debris inside the sheath comprises proximally retracting a wire tethered to a proximalmost one of the segments.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vasculature comprises a neurovasculature, and wherein the vascular debris comprises a thrombus.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein releasing at least a portion of the segment comprises releasing a distalmost segment at a position distal to the thrombus.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein, after releasing at least a portion of the segment, the waist of the segment engages a wall of the vasculature.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising aspirating a region adjacent the distal opening after releasing the at least a portion of the segment.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein retrieving the segment and at least a portion of the vascular debris inside the sheath comprises causing the segment to revert to the collapsed state.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein, after the inserting, the distal opening is positioned distal to the vascular debris, and wherein releasing at least a portion of the segment outside the distal opening comprises proximally retracting the sheath relative to the segment.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising expanding a balloon proximal to the vascular debris to substantially slow or stop blood flow downstream to the vascular debris.
