Abstract

A method of deploying a jointed tubular string into a subsea wellbore includes lowering the tubular string into the subsea wellbore from an offshore drilling unit. The tubular string has a slip joint. The method further includes, after lowering, anchoring a lower portion of the tubular string below the slip joint to a non-heaving structure. The method further includes, while the lower portion is anchored: supporting an upper portion of the tubular string above the slip joint from a rig floor of the offshore drilling unit; after supporting, adding one or more joints to the tubular string, thereby extending the tubular string; and releasing the upper portion of the extended tubular string from the rig floor. The method further includes: releasing the lower portion of the extended tubular string from the non-heaving structure; and lowering the extended tubular string into the subsea wellbore.

Claims (41)

1. A drill string gripper, comprising:

a first ram and a second ram, each ram radially movable between an engaged position and a disengaged position and having a die, wherein the die includes a plurality of gripping elements configured to grip an outer surface of a tubular to anchor the tubular when the first and second rams are in the engaged position;

a housing having a housing bore therethrough and a cavity for each of the first ram and the second ram;

a piston for each ram, each piston connected to the respective ram and operable to move the respective ram between the positions;

a cylinder for each ram, each cylinder connected to the housing and receiving the respective piston; and

a first bypass passage formed though the first ram, wherein the first bypass passage is a bore through the first ram, the first bypass passage operable to maintain fluid communication between upper and lower portions of the housing bore across the first and second rams in the engaged position.

2. The drill string gripper of claim 1 , further comprising a bonnet and a cap for each ram.

3. The drill string gripper of claim 1 , wherein the gripping elements penetrate the outer surface of the tubular when the first and second rams are in the engaged position.

4. The drill string gripper of claim 1 , wherein each die is formed from a hard material selected from the group of: a tool steel, a ceramic, and a cermet.

5. The drill string gripper of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first ram and second ram includes a semi-annular inner surface.

6. The drill string gripper of claim 1 , further comprising a second bypass passage formed through the second ram.

7. The drill string gripper of claim 2 , wherein each piston and bonnet carry seals for isolating chambers formed between each cap and piston.

8. A heave compensation system for assembling a tubular string, comprising:

a marine riser including the drill string gripper of claim 1 ; and

wherein the tubular string includes a tensioner.

9. The heave compensation system of claim 8 , further comprising a second drill string gripper of claim 1 .

10. A method of deploying a tubular string into a subsea wellbore, comprising:

lowering the tubular string into the subsea wellbore from an offshore drilling unit, wherein:

a blowout preventer (BOP) and a drill string gripper are connected to a subsea wellhead of the subsea wellbore,

the drill string gripper having one or more rams and a bypass passage, wherein the bypass passage is a bore through the one or more rams, and wherein each ram of the one or more rams includes a plurality of gripping elements configured to grip the tubular string;

the drill string gripper is connected above the BOP; and

detecting a well control event while lowering the tubular string;

engaging the plurality of gripping elements of the one or more rams with the tubular string in response to detecting the well control event to anchor the tubular string;

maintaining fluid communication in the subsea wellbore through the bypass passage of the drill string gripper after engaging the drill string gripper; and

engaging the BOP with the tubular string after engaging the drill string gripper.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

performing a degassing operation.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

lifting a drill bit of the tubular string off a bottom of the subsea wellbore after detecting the well control event and prior to engaging the gripping elements with the tubular string.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the gripping elements penetrate an outer surface of the tubular to grip the tubular when the one or more rams are engaged with the tubular.

14. A method of deploying a tubular string into a subsea wellbore, comprising:

lowering the tubular string into the subsea wellbore, wherein:

a drill string gripper is connected to a non-heaving structure, the drill string gripper including a first ram including a plurality of first gripping elements, a second ram including a plurality of second gripping elements, and a first bypass passage, wherein the first bypass passage is formed through the first ram; and

anchoring the tubular string to the non-heaving structure by engaging the plurality of first gripping elements of the first ram and the plurality of second gripping elements of the second ram with the tubular string.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the non-heaving structure is one of a marine riser, a lower marine riser package, and a blowout preventer (BOP) stack.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first ram includes a first die fastened to a surface thereof, wherein the first die includes the plurality of first gripping elements, and wherein the second ram includes a second die fastened to a surface thereof, wherein the second die includes the plurality of second gripping elements.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein engaging the plurality of first gripping elements of the first ram and the plurality of second gripping elements of the second ram with the tubular string includes penetrating the tubular with the plurality of the first gripping elements and with plurality of second gripping elements.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

after anchoring, adding one or more joints to the tubular string, thereby extending the tubular string.

19. The method of claim 14 , performing a degassing operation while anchoring the tubular string to the non-heaving structure.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein a blowout preventer (BOP) stack includes the drill string gripper.
