Abstract

Ablation probe tips ( 108, 148, 320, 360 ) and physical and virtual stents ( 110 ) for use in tooth bud ablation procedures that result in tooth agenesis as well as tooth bud ablation methods are described herein.

Claims (40)

1. A system including an ablation probe tip and a virtual stent, said ablation probe tip for use in an ablation procedure that results in tissue agenesis, said ablation probe tip for use with an ablation probe unit, said system comprising:

(a) said ablation probe tip having a shaft, said shaft having an insertion end for inserting into tissue and a connection end for connecting said ablation probe tip to said ablation probe unit, said ablation probe tip having a center of ablation;

(b) a sensored hand piece having sensors thereon, said connection end of said ablation probe tip being connectable to said sensored hand piece;

(c) said virtual stent having a display configured for displaying a volume scan, virtual markings calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, and real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip;

(d) said virtual markings providing guidance for said center of ablation of said ablation probe to be positioned within tissue to be ablated;

(e) said real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip being displayed overlaid on said displayed volume scan on said display; and

(f) said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip being guidable by the position of said real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip in relation to said virtual markings displayed on said display.

2. The system of claim 1 , said center of ablation positioned between said insertion end and said connection end.

3. The system of claim 1 , said virtual markings being virtual surgical guide angle markings based on a pre-defined angle calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, said pre-defined angle being a three-dimensional angle.

4. The system of claim 1 , said virtual markings being virtual surgical guide angle markings based on a pre-defined angle calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, said pre-defined angle being a three-dimensional pre-defined angle, said ablation probe tip being guidable at said three-dimensional pre-defined angle by said virtual surgical guide angle markings displayed on said display.

5. The system of claim 1 , said virtual markings being at least one virtual stop marking based on a pre-defined depth calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, said ablation probe tip being depth limited by stop information to said pre-defined depth, wherein said center of ablation is within said tissue when said ablation probe tip is guided to said pre-defined depth.

6. The system of claim 1 , said virtual markings being at least one virtual stop marking based on a pre-defined depth calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, said ablation probe tip being depth limited by stop information to said pre-defined depth, said stop information being provided by said at least one virtual stop marking displayed on said display.

7. The system of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by stop information to said pre-defined depth, said stop information being provided by an indicator selected from the group consisting of:

(a) a visual indicator;

(b) an audible indicator;

(c) a tactile indicator; and

(d) a combination of at least two indicators selected from (a)-(c).

8. The system of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip having an extension stop structure between said center of ablation and an absolute tip at said insertion end of said ablation probe tip, said extension stop structure being physical prevention of progression of said ablation probe tip provided by interaction of said absolute tip with bone below or above said tissue.

9. The system of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip for at least partially ablating tissue of at least one tooth bud without ablating surrounding tissue.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein said ablation procedure that results in tissue agenesis is a tooth bud ablation procedure that results in tooth agenesis by inserting said insertion end into a tooth bud.

11. The system of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being a sensored ablation probe tip.

12. The system of claim 1 , said virtual markings being a virtual target markings based on information obtained from said volume scan, wherein said center of ablation is within said tissue when said ablation probe tip is guided by said virtual target markings displayed on said display.

13. A system including an ablation probe tip and a virtual stent, said ablation probe tip for use in an ablation procedure that results in tissue agenesis, said ablation probe tip for use with an ablation probe unit, said system comprising:

(a) said ablation probe tip having a shaft, said shaft having an insertion end for inserting into tissue and a connection end for connecting said ablation probe tip to said ablation probe unit, said ablation probe tip having a center of ablation;

(b) a sensored hand piece having sensors thereon, said connection end of said ablation probe tip being connectable to said sensored hand piece;

(c) said virtual stent having a display configured for displaying a volume scan, virtual markings calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, and real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip;

(d) said virtual markings being virtual surgical guide angle markings and at least one virtual stop marking, said virtual surgical guide angle markings based on a pre-defined angle calculated from information obtained from said volume scan, and said at least one virtual stop marking based on a pre-defined depth calculated from information obtained from said volume scan;

(e) said virtual markings providing guidance for said center of ablation of said ablation probe to be positioned within tissue to be ablated;

(f) said real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip being displayed overlaid on said displayed volume scan on said display; and

(g) said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip being guidable by the position of said real-time representations of said sensored hand piece and said ablation probe tip in relation to said virtual markings displayed on said display.

14. The system of claim 13 , said center of ablation positioned between said insertion end and said connection end.

15. The system of claim 13 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by stop information to said pre-defined depth, said stop information being provided by an indicator selected from the group consisting of:
