Abstract

A see-through head mounted display with controllable light blocking includes an optics module comprising a light source and image source positioned on a same side of an angled partially-reflective surface, wherein the light source projects light off the surface to the image source which reflects the light as image light to the surface which transmits the image light along a first axis. The display also includes a flat combiner positioned to reflect the image light off of a first side and simultaneously transmit incident light through the first and a second side, along an optical axis perpendicular to the first axis to provide a view of a displayed image overlaid onto a see-through view of the environment, and a controllable light blocking element arranged generally parallel to the flat combiner and in front of the second side to block light incident on the same optical axis as the image light.

Claims (49)

1. A wearable head device comprising:

an image source;

a combiner element, the combiner element configured to:

receive image light from the image source,

receive environmental light from an environment of the wearable head device, and

concurrently present, to an eye of a user of the wearable head device, the image light and the environmental light; and

a controllable light-blocking element in communication with one or more processors, the controllable light-blocking element configured to selectively block a first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye;

wherein the one or more processors are configured to perform a method comprising:

identifying a first portion of the image light; and

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light corresponds to the first portion of the image light, blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

2. The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light does not correspond to the first portion of the image light, forgoing blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

3. The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a low-contrast portion of the image light.

4. The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a portion of the image light corresponding to an overlay element.

5. The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein the combiner element and the controllable light-blocking element are oriented along a common axis.

6. The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein the controllable light-blocking element comprises one or more of an electrochromic element, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal.

7. The wearable head device of claim 1 , further comprising a second controllable light-blocking element in communication with the one or more processors, wherein:

the second controllable light-blocking element is configured to selectively block a second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, and

the method further comprises:

concurrently with blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, forgoing blocking, via the second controllable light-blocking element, the second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

8. A method comprising:

receiving, at a combiner element of a wearable head device, image light from an image source;

receiving, at the combiner element, environmental light from an environment of the wearable head device, wherein the wearable head device comprises a controllable light-blocking element configured to selectively block a first portion of the environmental light from reaching an eye of a user of the wearable head device;

identifying a first portion of the image light; and

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light corresponds to the first portion of the image light, blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, wherein the combiner element is configured to concurrently present, to the eye of the user of the wearable head device, the image light and the environmental light.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light does not correspond to the first portion of the image light, forgoing blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a low-contrast portion of the image light.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a portion of the image light corresponding to an overlay element.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the combiner element and the controllable light-blocking element are oriented along a common axis.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the controllable light-blocking element comprises one or more of an electrochromic element, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the wearable head device further comprises a second controllable light-blocking element configured to selectively block a second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, and

the method further comprises:

concurrently with blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, forgoing blocking, via the second controllable light-blocking element, the second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to execute a method comprising:

receiving, at a combiner element of a wearable head device, image light from an image source;

receiving, at the combiner element, environmental light from an environment of the wearable head device, wherein the wearable head device comprises a controllable light-blocking element configured to selectively block a first portion of the environmental light from reaching an eye of a user of the wearable head device;

identifying a first portion of the image light; and

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light corresponds to the first portion of the image light, blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, wherein the combiner element is configured to concurrently present, to the eye of the user of the wearable head device, the image light and the environmental light.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , the method further comprising:

in accordance with a determination that the first portion of the environmental light does not correspond to the first portion of the image light, forgoing blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a low-contrast portion of the image light.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein identifying the first portion of the image light comprises identifying a portion of the image light corresponding to an overlay element.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the controllable light-blocking element comprises one or more of an electrochromic element, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein:

the wearable head device further comprises a second controllable light-blocking element configured to selectively block a second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, and

the method further comprises:

concurrently with blocking, via the controllable light-blocking element, the first portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye, forgoing blocking, via the second controllable light-blocking element, the second portion of the environmental light from reaching the eye.
