Abstract

A device for clearing obstructions from a medical tube, such as a chest tube, is disclosed in various embodiments. The device features a clearance member in the form of a loop. The loop desirably has a diameter that substantially corresponds to the inner diameter of the medical tube. Also desirably, the loop presents a substantially unobstructed pathway therethrough for the flow of material from a location in the medical tube distal to the loop to a location in the medical tube proximal to the loop regardless whether the clearance member is being translated or is at rest in the medical tube. Methods of utilizing such a device are also disclosed.

Claims (12)

. A method of clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising actuating a clearance member disposed within the medical tube by initially withdrawing the clearance member in a proximal direction from a resting position to engage and draw debris proximally, away from a distal end of the medical tube, and thereafter returning the clearance member to the resting position, wherein actuation of the clearance member does not induce a negative pressure within the medical tube or strengthen a suction drawn within a body cavity of a patient in which the medical tube has been installed, and wherein the clearance member is formed with or attached to a guide member disposed entirely within a suction passageway defined partially by the medical tube and through which the debris from the medical tube is drawn by a suction source.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clearance member presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from the distal end of the medical tube to a proximal end of the medical tube regardless whether the clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within the medical tube.

. The method of claim 1 , the guide member comprising a guide wire, the clearance member comprising a wire loop formed from or attached to a terminal portion of the guide wire.

. The method of claim 1 , the clearance member being actuated from outside the medical tube.

. The method of claim 1 , further comprising actuating the guide member from outside the medical tube to thereby actuate the clearance member within the medical tube, the guide member and clearance member being configured so that the clearance member does not emerge from the distal end of the medical tube during the actuating step.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein a shuttle is coupled to the guide member, the shuttle being actuated outside the medical tube to correspondingly actuate the guide member, and thereby the clearance member in the medical tube.

. The method of claim 6 , the shuttle being magnetically coupled to the guide member.

. The method of claim 1 , said suction passageway comprising a sterile field for the passage of debris from the medical tube out a proximal end of the suction passageway.

. The method of claim 8 , wherein actuating the clearance member does not compromise the sterile field.

. The method of claim 1 , further comprising successively repeating the actuating step.

. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling a guide tube in fluid communication with the medical tube, and translating a shuttle outside and along the guide tube to thereby actuate the clearance member disposed within the medical tube.

. The method of claim 11 , the guide tube and the medical tube defining said suction passageway through the respective tubes which comprises a sterile field.
