Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion having an interior cavity and a front portion, and a face portion attached to the front portion of the body portion to enclose the interior cavity. The face portion may include a face pocket portion having an opening defining a face cavity, and a face plate portion covering the opening to close the face cavity. The golf club head also includes a first filler material at least partially filling the interior cavity, and a second filler material at least partially filling the face cavity. The first filler material and the second filler material may be separated by one or more walls of the face pocket portion. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (38)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a body interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge;

a face portion attached to the front portion of the body portion to close the body interior cavity, the face portion comprising a face pocket portion having a face interior cavity, and a face plate portion configured to close the face interior cavity;

a first filler material configured to at least partially fill the body interior cavity; and

a second filler material configured to at least partially fill the face interior cavity, wherein the first filler material and the second filler material are separated by one or more walls of the face pocket portion, and

wherein a maximum distance between the top portion edge and the sole portion edge is greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion.

2. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first filler material and the second filler material have different physical properties.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face portion and the face pocket portion are a continuous one-piece part, and wherein the face plate portion is attached to a front surface of the face portion to close the face interior cavity.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face portion and the face plate portion are a continuous one-piece part, and wherein the face pocket portion is attached to a back surface of face portion to close the face interior cavity.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face pocket portion comprises at least one port, and wherein the face interior cavity is filled with the second filler material from the at least one port.

6. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes at least one port connected to the body interior cavity, wherein the face pocket portion includes at least one port connected to the body interior cavity, and wherein the face interior cavity is filled with the second filler material from the at least one port of the face pocket portion via the at least one port of the body portion.

7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second filler material comprises a preformed filler insert placed in the face interior cavity to at least partially fill the face interior cavity.

8. An iron-type golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a first interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge;

a face portion attached to the front portion of the body portion to enclose the first interior cavity, the face portion comprising a face pocket portion having a second interior cavity, and a face plate portion configured to enclose the second interior cavity; and

a filler material at least partially filling the second interior cavity,

wherein the second interior cavity is filled with the filler material from at least one port on the face pocket portion, and

wherein a maximum distance between the top portion edge and the sole portion edge is greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion.

9. An iron-type golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the body portion comprises a first port connected to the first interior cavity, wherein the face pocket portion comprises a second port connecting the second interior cavity to the first interior cavity, and wherein the second interior cavity is at least partially filled with the filler material from the second port via the first port.

10. An iron-type golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the filler material comprises a first material having different physical property than a second material at least partially filling the first interior cavity.

11. An iron-type golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the filler material comprises a formed insert placed in the second interior cavity before the face plate portion is attached to the face pocket portion.

12. An iron-type golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the body portion comprises a plurality of recessed portions defining the first interior cavity, wherein a central recessed portion of the plurality of recessed portions includes a maximum width of the first interior cavity, and wherein at least a portion of the central recessed portion is filled with a first filler material having a different physical property than a second filler material at least partially filling the second interior cavity.

13. An iron-type golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the face plate portion comprises a thickness smaller than a thickness of a region of the face portion adjacent to the face plate portion.

14. A golf club comprising:

a shaft of a golf club having a first end and a second end opposite the first end;

a grip of a golf club attached to the first end of the shaft;

a golf club head coupled the second end of the shaft, the golf club head including a body portion having a body cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge;

a face portion attached to the front portion of the body portion to close the body cavity, the face portion comprising a face pocket portion having a face cavity, and a face plate portion configured to close the face cavity;

a first filler material configured to at least partially fill the body cavity; and

a second filler material configured to at least partially fill the face cavity,

wherein the first filler material and the second filler material are separated by one or more walls of the face pocket portion, and

wherein a maximum distance between the top portion edge and the sole portion edge is greater than a maximum distance between the face portion and the back wall portion.
