Abstract

A device comprises a film with an adhesive layer on a first side of a core layer, a major sheet area of the film bounded by edges of the film with a light extracting region positioned to receive and extract light propagating by total internal reflection within the core layer out of the major sheet area, and a minor sheet between the major sheet area and an array of strips. The strips extend from the minor sheet area of the film, and each strip of the array of strips is folded within a fold region and stacked. The device further comprises a component extending a width of the array of strips where they extend from the minor sheet area, wherein the adhesive layer adheres the component to the film between fold region and the light extracting region. In some embodiments, the adhesive layer is a cladding layer.

Claims (30)

1. A device comprising:

a film comprising an adhesive layer on a first side of a core layer, the film further comprising a major sheet area of the film bounded by edges of the film, the major sheet area comprising a light extracting region positioned to receive and extract light propagating by total internal reflection within the core layer out of the major sheet area;

a minor sheet area of the film between the major sheet area and an array of strips, the array of strips extended from the minor sheet area of the film, and each strip of the array of strips is folded within a fold region and stacked; and

a component extending a width of the array of strips where they extend from the minor sheet area, wherein the adhesive layer adheres the component to the film between fold region and the light extracting region.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the film comprises an elastic energy due to the array of strips being folded and the component stores the elastic energy in the film by holding the film to the component between the fold region and the light extracting region.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the component is a relative position maintaining element that maintains a relative position of each strip of the array of strips within the fold region.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive is a methyl-based silicone pressure sensitive adhesive or a polyacrylate adhesive.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the component is not adhered to the film in the light extracting region of the film.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the core layer has a first refractive index n m , the adhesive layer is a cladding layer with a second refractive index n clad , and n m −n clad is greater than 0.01.

8. The device of claim 7 wherein the adhesive layer has a peel strength greater than 8.929 kilograms per meter of bond width with the component.

9. The device of claim 1 further comprising a cladding layer between the adhesive layer and the core layer.

10. The device of claim 1 further comprising a light source positioned to input light into the array of strips.

11. The device of claim 10 further comprising a reflective spatial light modulator posited to receive the light from the light source extracted from the light extracting region.

12. A device comprising:

a film comprising a core layer, the film further comprising a major sheet area of the film bounded by edges of the film, the major sheet area comprising a light emitting region comprising light extracting features positioned to receive and extract light propagating by total internal reflection within the core layer out of the major sheet area;

a minor sheet area of the film between the major sheet area and an array of strips, the array of strips extended from the minor sheet area of the film, and each strip of the array of strips is folded within a fold region and stacked; and

a component including a frame adhered to the film between the fold region and the light emitting region and maintaining a relative position of each strip of the array of strips in the fold region.

13. The device of claim 12 wherein the film comprises an elastic energy due to the array of strips being folded and the component stores the elastic energy in the film by holding the film to the component between the fold region and the light extracting region.

14. The device of claim 12 wherein the component is adhered to the film using a polyacrylate pressure sensitive adhesive layer.

15. The device of claim 12 wherein the core layer has a first refractive index n m , the component is adhered to the film using an adhesive layer with a second refractive index n clad , and n m −n clad is greater than 0.01.

16. The device of claim 12 wherein the component is adhered to the film using an adhesive layer that has a peel strength greater than 8.929 kilograms per meter of bond width with the component.

17. The device of claim 12 further comprising a light source positioned to input light into the array of strips and a reflective spatial light modulator posited to receive the light from the light source extracted from the light extracting region.

18. A method of restraining a film, the method comprising:

applying an adhesive layer on at least one side of the film comprising a core layer, the film further comprising a major sheet area of the film bounded by edges of the film, the major sheet area comprising a light extracting region positioned to receive and extract light propagating by total internal reflection within the core layer out of the major sheet area;

forming an array of strips extending from a minor sheet area of the film, the minor sheet area positioned between the major sheet area and the array of strips;

folding each strip of the array of strips within a fold region and stacking the array of strips; and

adhering a component to the film between fold region and the light extracting region using the adhesive layer.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein folding each strip of the array of strips stores elastic energy in the film and the component stores the elastic energy in the film by holding the film to the component between the fold region and the light extracting region.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the core layer has a first refractive index n m , the component is adhered to the film using an adhesive layer with a second refractive index n clad , and n m −n clad is greater than 0.01.
