Abstract

The devices and methods described herein relate to improved structures for removing obstructions from body lumens. Such devices have applicability in through-out the ho including clearing of blockages within the vasculature, by addressing the frictional resistance on the obstruction prior to attempting to translate and/or mobilize the obstruction within the body lumen.

Claims (38)

1. A clot removal device, comprising:

an elongated member configured to be intravascularly positioned at a treatment site within a cerebral blood vessel proximate a thrombus;

a stent having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, the proximal end portion coupled to a distal end of the elongated member and configured to enmesh the thrombus, and the distal end portion defining a distally oriented opening; and

a funnel formed from a plurality of braided filaments, the funnel including:

a proximal end having a proximal opening configured to slidably receive the elongated member therethrough such that the stent is movable relative to the funnel,

a distal end having a distal opening,

an interior region extending between the proximal and distal openings of the funnel, and

an exterior surface extending between the proximal and distal openings of the funnel and configured to radially expand against a wall of the blood vessel when the stent is not inside the interior region,

wherein the funnel is configured to receive at least a portion of the stent through the distal opening and within the interior region; and

a polymeric coating material disposed on only a portion of the funnel and configured to reduce permeability of the portion of the funnel.

2. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the funnel includes an exterior wall comprising the exterior surface and an interior wall.

3. The clot removal device of claim 2 , wherein the exterior wall and the interior wall are continuous with each other at the distal end of the funnel, and are spaced apart from each other at the interior region of the funnel.

4. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the funnel is shape set.

5. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the interior region of the funnel is tapered so that the distal opening is larger than the proximal opening.

6. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the funnel that is not covered by the coating material is porous.

7. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member is a first elongated member, and the clot removal device further includes a second elongated member configured to be intravascularly positioned at the treatment site, and wherein the proximal end of the funnel is coupled to a distal end of the second elongated member.

8. The clot removal device of claim 7 , wherein the second elongated member is a shaft having a lumen therethrough.

9. The clot removal device of claim 7 , wherein the second elongated member is a wire.

10. The clot removal device of claim 1 , further comprising a catheter having a distal end configured to be positioned at the treatment site, wherein the catheter is configured to slidably receive the stent and the funnel therethrough.

11. The clot removal device of claim 10 , wherein the catheter is coupled to a vacuum source.

12. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the stent is a retriever.

13. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the stent is generally tubular in a relaxed state.

14. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the stent includes a tapered proximal portion.

15. The clot removal device of claim 1 , wherein the stent is configured to transition between a delivery state in which the stent is radially collapsed to a deployed state in which the stent is radially expanded, and wherein the exterior surface of the funnel is configured to radially expand when the stent is in the deployed state and no radially expanded portion of the deployed stent is inside the interior region of the funnel.

16. A clot removal device, comprising:

an elongated member configured to be intravascularly positioned at a treatment site within a cerebral blood vessel proximate a thrombus;

a stent having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, the proximal end portion coupled to the elongated member and configured to enmesh the thrombus, the distal end portion defining a distally oriented opening; and

a mesh funnel including:

a proximal end having a proximal opening configured to slidably receive the elongated member therethrough such that the stent is movable relative to the mesh funnel,

a distal end having a distal opening,

an interior cavity extending between the proximal and distal openings, the interior cavity configured to receive at least a portion of the stent, and

an exterior surface extending between the proximal and distal openings and configured to radially expand to engage a wall of the blood vessel when the stent is not inside the interior cavity, the exterior surface including a polymeric coating material along less than an entire length of the mesh funnel, wherein the polymeric coating material is configured to reduce permeability of the exterior surface.

17. The clot removal device of claim 16 , wherein the mesh funnel is formed from an inverted mesh tube.

18. The clot removal device of claim 16 , wherein the mesh funnel includes at least two walls.

19. The clot removal device of claim 16 , further comprising a catheter having a distal end configured to be positioned at the treatment site, wherein the catheter is configured to slidably receive the stent and the mesh funnel therethrough.

20. The clot removal device of claim 19 , wherein the catheter is coupled to a vacuum source.

21. The clot removal device of claim 16 , wherein the stent is coupled to an energy source.

22. The clot removal device of claim 16 , wherein the stent is configured to transition between a delivery state in which the stent is radially collapsed to a deployed state in which the stent is radially expanded, and wherein the exterior surface of the funnel is configured to radially expand when the stent is in the deployed state and no radially expanded portion of the deployed stent is inside the interior cavity of the funnel.
