Abstract

Distributed grid network intelligence enables intelligent local energy storage backup control. A consumer node includes a local energy storage system. A distributed control node for the consumer node monitors local power demand and local energy generation. The control node calculates an interface operation for accessing energy from the local energy storage or charging the local energy storage, based on the local power demand and the local energy generation. The control node triggers a local power converter to execute the interface operation with the local energy storage.

Claims (35)

1. A consumer node within a power grid, comprising:

a grid connector to couple to a power grid at a point of common coupling (PCC);

a local energy store on a consumer side of the PCC downstream from a grid meter on a grid side of the PCC, the grid meter to measure power delivered by the power grid for a utility to charge a consumer for the power delivered, the local energy store to store power from a local energy source that generates direct current (DC) power; and

a microinverter on the consumer side of the PCC downstream from the grid meter to generate an output current from energy in the local energy store, the output current having a different phase than a grid voltage of the power grid, to generate reactive power to adjust a ratio of real power to reactive power as seen at the PCC.

2. The consumer node of claim 1 , wherein the local energy source comprises a solar power system at a customer premises.

3. The consumer node of claim 1 , wherein the local energy store comprises a battery.

4. The consumer node of claim 1 , wherein the microinverter is further to charge the local energy store from power provided by the power grid.

5. The consumer node of claim 1 , wherein the microinverter is further to charge the local energy store from power provided by the local energy source.

6. The consumer node of claim 1 , wherein the microinverter is to adjust the ratio of real power to reactive power to provide grid support from the local energy store to the power grid.

7. The consumer node of claim 1 , further comprising:

a local meter on the consumer side of the PCC, downstream from the grid meter, the local meter to monitor local power demand and local energy generation on the consumer side of the PCC.

8. A power grid system, comprising:

a local energy source on a consumer side of a point of common coupling (PCC) downstream from a grid meter on a grid side of the PCC, the grid meter to measure power delivered by a power grid for a utility to charge a consumer for the power delivered, the local energy source to generate direct current (DC) power;

a local energy store on the consumer side of the PCC downstream from the grid meter, the local energy store to store power from the local energy source; and

a control node coupled to the local energy source and the local energy store, the control node including

a grid connector to couple to the power grid at the PCC;

a microinverter on the consumer side of the PCC downstream from the grid meter to generate an output current from energy in the local energy store, the output current having a different phase than a grid voltage of the power grid, to generate reactive power to adjust a ratio of real power to reactive power as seen at the PCC.

9. The power grid system of claim 8 , wherein the local energy source comprises a solar power system at a customer premises.

10. The power grid system of claim 8 , wherein the local energy store comprises a battery.

11. The power grid system of claim 8 , wherein the microinverter is further to charge the local energy store from power provided by the power grid.

12. The power grid system of claim 8 , wherein the microinverter is further to charge the local energy store from power provided by the local energy source.

13. The power grid system of claim 8 , wherein the microinverter is to adjust the ratio of real power to reactive power to provide grid support from the local energy store to the power grid.

14. The power grid system of claim 8 , the control node further comprising:

a local meter on the consumer side of the PCC, downstream from the grid meter, the local meter to monitor local power demand and local energy generation on the consumer side of the PCC.

15. A method comprising:

coupling to a power grid at a point of common coupling (PCC);

storing power from a local energy source that generates direct current (DC) power in a local energy store on a consumer side of the PCC downstream from a grid meter on a grid side of the PCC, the grid meter to measure power delivered by the power grid for a utility to charge a consumer for the power delivered; and

generating, with a microinverter on the consumer side of the PCC downstream from the grid meter, an output current from energy in the local energy store, the output current having a different phase than a grid voltage of the power grid, to generate reactive power to adjust a ratio of real power to reactive power as seen at the PCC.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the local energy source comprises a solar power system at a customer premises.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the local energy store comprises a battery.
