Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described including a valve frame defining a frame aperture and at least one arm attached to a portion of the valve frame on a ventricular side of said frame aperture. The at least one arm is configured to extend radially from the portion of the valve frame such that a chord receiving surface of the arm is sized and shaped to deploy among a region of the chords of the native mitral valve. The arm is curved, with an interior of the arm facing a direction in which the valve frame is configured to be rotated during deployment of the prosthetic mitral valve apparatus within the native mitral valve and with the arm having a concavely rounded leading edge facing at least partially in a circumferential direction. Other applications are also described.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus for use with a native mitral valve of a mammalian heart, the apparatus comprising:

prosthetic mitral valve apparatus configured to be deployed within the native mitral valve, the prosthetic mitral valve apparatus comprising:

a prosthetic heart valve mechanism comprising at least a valve member that is configured to restrict blood flow from a left ventricle to a left atrium of the mammalian heart;

a valve frame defining a frame aperture, said frame aperture sized to:

circumferentially enclose the prosthetic heart valve mechanism, and

fit within an aperture of the native mitral valve, between the left ventricle and the left atrium of the mammalian heart; and

at least one arm attached to a portion of the valve frame on a ventricular side of said frame aperture, the at least one arm being configured to extend radially from the portion of the valve frame such that:

a chord receiving surface of the at least one arm is sized and shaped to deploy among a region of the chords of the native mitral valve, and

the at least one arm is curved, with an interior of the at least one arm facing a direction in which the valve frame is configured to be rotated during deployment of the prosthetic mitral valve apparatus within the native mitral valve and with the at least one arm having a concavely rounded leading edge facing at least partially in a circumferential direction, such that upon the valve frame being rotated in said direction, the at least one arm is configured to deflect the shape of contacted chords, to thereby pull at least one valve leaflet of the native mitral valve at least partially around said frame aperture, and into an at least partially closed configuration around said frame aperture.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one arm is configured to pull the at least one valve leaflet of the native mitral valve at least partially around said frame aperture and into the at least partially closed configuration around said frame aperture, such that the native mitral valve leaflet prevents the flow of blood between itself and said valve frame, at least in a direction passing from the left ventricle to the left atrium.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a portion of said valve frame on the atrial side of said frame aperture is too wide to pass through the aperture of the native mitral valve.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the valve frame is configured such that said deflection of the shapes of the contacted chords is maintained after deployment of the valve frame, at least by opposing force generated by contact of the valve frame with tissue of the heart on the atrial side of said frame aperture.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the valve frame is configured such that said deflection of the shapes of the contacted chords is maintained after deployment of the valve frame, at least by opposing force generated by contact of the valve frame with tissue of the heart on the ventricular side of said frame aperture.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the valve frame is configured such that said deflection of the shapes of the contacted chords is maintained after deployment of the valve frame, at least by opposing force generated by contact of the valve frame with at least one valve leaflet of the native mitral valve.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the valve frame is configured such that said deflection of the shapes of the contacted chords is maintained after deployment of the valve frame at least by opposing force generated by contact of the valve frame with at least one other chord which the valve frame deflects the shape of.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said valve frame comprises at least two metal parts secured to one another by at least one suture.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said valve frame is configured to be in a compact configuration upon delivery to the heart, and to expand at least radially during deployment.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one arm further comprises one or more side projections protruding from a side of the at least one arm, the projections projecting toward a base of the at least one arm, and being configured to push chords aside as the at least one arm deploys among the region of chords, and to block escape of the chords when there is relative movement in another direction.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the valve frame is configured to trap the at least one leaflet of the native mitral valve in the at least one partially closed configuration around the frame aperture.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said chord receiving surface defines a chord capturing region, is shaped to guide encountered chords into said chord capturing region, and is shaped to bar chords entering said chord capturing region from exiting.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein said chord receiving surface is oriented with respect to the direction in which the valve frame is configured to be rotated during deployment of the prosthetic mitral valve apparatus within the native mitral valve, and has at least one slope that guides chords encountered while moving in said direction into said chord capturing region.

14. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein said chord receiving surface is oriented with respect to the direction in which the valve frame is configured to be rotated during deployment of the prosthetic mitral valve apparatus within the native mitral valve, and has at least one hooked portion that prevents chords moving in opposition to said rotation direction from exiting said chord capturing region.
