Abstract

A refuse vehicle includes a chassis, a body, and a plurality of battery cells. The chassis includes a right frame member and a left frame member spaced apart in a lateral direction and extending lengthwise in a longitudinal direction. The body is coupled to the chassis. The plurality of battery cells are longitudinally disposed along the chassis, positioned between the right frame member and the left frame member.

Claims (27)

1. A refuse vehicle comprising:

a chassis comprising:

a right frame member and a left frame member spaced apart in a lateral direction, the right frame member and the left frame member both comprising vertical portions, first end portions extending from first ends of the vertical portions towards each other, and second end portions extending from second ends of the vertical portions towards each other, the right frame member and the left frame member configured to support a body of the refuse vehicle, the body defining a refuse compartment, the right frame member and the left frame member extending lengthwise in a longitudinal direction, the right frame member being separate from the left frame member; and

a plurality of battery cells longitudinally disposed along the chassis, positioned between the right frame member and the left frame member, wherein the plurality of battery cells are fixedly coupled with the right frame member and the left frame member by a fastener that couples with the vertical portions of the right frame member and the left frame member.

2. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells extend in the lateral direction between the right frame member and the left frame member and a housing of the plurality of battery cells abuts dampers that abut inwards facing surfaces of the right frame member and the left frame member.

3. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned below an underside of the body.

4. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of battery cells comprise a stack of multiple battery cells.

5. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are disposed within one or more housings, the one or more housings fixedly coupled with the right frame member and the left frame member.

6. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a lower periphery of the right frame member and the left frame member, an upper periphery of the right frame member and the left frame member, and inwards facing surfaces of the right frame member and the left frame member define a space within which the plurality of battery cells are positioned.

7. The refuse vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a right body frame member and a left body frame member extending in the longitudinal direction along an underside of the body, wherein the right body frame member and the left body frame member define a space therebetween, and wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned between the right frame member and the left frame member but not within the space defined by the right body frame member and the left body frame member.

8. A refuse vehicle comprising:

a chassis comprising a right frame member and a left frame member spaced apart in a lateral direction and extending lengthwise in a longitudinal direction, the right frame member being separate from the left frame member and defining a lengthwise opening between the right frame member and the left frame member at a top bottom of the chassis, wherein the right frame member and the left frame member each comprise a vertical portion, and a pair of flanges at opposite ends of the vertical portion, the pair of flanges of the right frame member and the left frame member extending laterally inwards towards each other;

a body coupled to the chassis;

a plurality of battery cells longitudinally disposed along the body beneath a floor of the body between the right frame member and the left frame member, wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned below above the lengthwise opening between the right frame member and the left frame member and are supported by the right frame member and the left frame member by a coupling at the vertical portions of the right frame member and the left frame member, at a position along the vertical portions vertically between the pair of flanges of the right frame member and the left frame member.

9. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the right frame member and the left frame member are configured to provide structural support for the body, the body defining a refuse compartment configured to be loaded with refuse.

10. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of battery cells extend in the lateral direction between the right frame member and the left frame member and a housing of the plurality of battery cells abuts dampers that abut inwards facing surfaces of the right frame member and the left frame member.

11. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned below an underside of the body.

12. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of battery cells comprise a stack of multiple battery cells.

13. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are disposed within one or more housings, the one or more housings fixedly coupled with the right frame member and the left frame member.

14. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein a lower periphery of the right frame member and the left frame member, an upper periphery of the right frame member and the left frame member, and inwards facing surfaces of the right frame member and the left frame member define a space within which the plurality of battery cells are positioned.

15. The refuse vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the body comprises a right body frame member and a left body frame member extending in the longitudinal direction along an underside of the body, wherein the right body frame member and the left body frame member define a space therebetween, and wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned between the right frame member and the left frame member but not within the space defined by the right body frame member and the left body frame member.

16. A refuse vehicle comprising:

a chassis comprising a right frame member and a left frame member spaced apart in a lateral direction and extending lengthwise in a longitudinal direction, the right frame member being separate from the left frame member, the right frame member and the left frame member each having a medial portion, a first flange at an upper end of the medial portion, and a second flange at a lower end of the medial portion, wherein the first flanges of the right frame member and the left frame member extend inwards towards each other, and the second flanges of the right frame member and the left frame member extend inwards towards each other;

a body supported by the right frame member and the left frame member, the body defining a refuse compartment configured to receive and store refuse and having a floor surface;

a plurality of battery cells longitudinally disposed along the chassis and the body, the plurality of battery cells positioned beneath the refuse compartment and the floor surface and positioned between the right frame member and the left frame member, an upper periphery of the plurality of battery cells positioned lower than the first flange of the right frame member and the left frame member, wherein the plurality of battery cells are supported by the right frame member and the left frame member by a coupling at the medial portion of the right frame member and the left frame member.

17. The refuse vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are configured to provide electrical energy for one or more chassis operations or one or more body operations of the refuse vehicle.

18. The refuse vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the right frame member and the left frame member are both C-shaped frame members, the first flange and the second flange of the right frame member being substantially perpendicular with the medial portion of the right frame member and the first flange and second flange of the left frame member being substantially perpendicular with the medial portion of the left frame member.
