Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclonic stage comprising an openable front wall provided at the front end of the cyclonic stage. A pre-motor filter is positioned in the air flow passage downstream from the cyclone air outlet and rearward of the cyclone sidewall. The pre-motor filter has a diameter in a direction transverse to the cyclone axis that is larger than a diameter of the cyclone air outlet in the direction transverse to the cyclone axis. The pre-motor filter has an outer perimeter defining a volume and the cyclone axis and the motor axis each extend through a centre of the volume. The cyclone axis is generally parallel to the motor axis. When the openable front wall is opened, the front end of the cyclone stage is opened and has an opening, the opening has a diameter in the direction transverse to the cyclone axis, and the rear end of the cyclonic stage has a diameter that is generally equal to the diameter of the opening. The cyclonic stage is removable from a cleaner body which houses the suction motor with the openable front wall in a closed position. When the first cyclonic stage is removed, the pre-motor filter is accessible for removal.

Claims (25)

1. A vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet provided in a cleaning head to a clean air outlet, the cleaning head having a front end with the dirty air inlet and a rear end;

(b) an upright support structure pivotally mounted to the cleaning head;

(c) a portable surface cleaning unit that is removably mounted to the upright support structure, the portable surface cleaning unit having the clean air outlet with a cyclone and a suction motor that are positioned in the air flow path;

(d) the cyclone comprising a cyclone chamber extending along a cyclone chamber axis, the cyclone chamber comprising a cyclone chamber first end, an opposed cyclone chamber second end spaced apart from the cyclone chamber first end and a cyclone chamber sidewall extending between the first and second cyclone chamber ends, the cyclone chamber first end comprising a cyclone chamber first end wall and a dirt outlet and the opposed cyclone chamber second end comprising a cyclone chamber second end wall, a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, wherein the cyclone chamber first end wall is openable whereby the cyclone chamber is opened, wherein the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet are positioned below the dirt outlet when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head;

(e) fluid outlet comprises a tapered member extending axially inwardly from the cyclone chamber second end wall, the tapered member comprises a longitudinally extending porous media and has a first end located at the cyclone chamber second end wall and a narrower second end spaced axially inwardly from the cyclone chamber second end wall; and,

(f) a dirt collection chamber exterior to the cyclone chamber and in communication with the dirt outlet to receive dirt therefrom, the dirt collection chamber extending along a dirt collection chamber axis, the dirt collection chamber comprising a dirt collection chamber first end wall, an opposed dirt collection chamber second end wall spaced apart from the first collection chamber first end wall, and a dirt collection chamber sidewall extending therebetween, the dirt collection chamber first end wall being openable whereby the dirt collection chamber is opened,

wherein when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, the dirt collection chamber first end wall and the cyclone chamber first end wall are an openable upper wall of the portable surface cleaning unit.

2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the portable surface cleaning unit comprises a carry handle.

3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, an outer wall of the portable surface cleaning unit comprises a portion of the dirt collection chamber sidewall that faces forwardly.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 3 wherein, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, a portion of the dirt collection chamber is positioned between the portion of the dirt collection chamber that faces forwardly and the cyclone chamber.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a pre-motor filter wherein the pre-motor filter is positioned underlying the cyclone chamber when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head.

6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 wherein the suction motor underlies the pre-motor filter when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone and dirt collection chamber comprise a cyclone unit and, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, the cyclone unit comprises a removable upper end of the portable surface cleaning unit.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure, a flexible conduit comprises a portion of the air flow path that is upstream of the cyclone and an outlet end of the flexible conduit is concurrently removable with the portable surface cleaning unit from the upright support structure.

9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 8 wherein the air flow path comprises a portion positioned between the flexible conduit and the cyclone and, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure, the portion of the air flow path is shorter than the flexible conduit.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a lock moveable between a locked position in which the openable upper wall of the portable surface cleaning unit is locked in a closed position, and an open position in which the openable upper wall of the portable surface cleaning unit is moveable to an open position in which the cyclone chamber and dirt collection chamber are emptyable, wherein when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, the lock is positioned on a front side of the portable surface cleaning unit.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, an outer wall of the portable surface cleaning unit comprises a portion of the dirt collection chamber sidewall that faces forwardly and the vacuum cleaner further comprising a lock moveable between a locked position in which the openable upper wall of the portable surface cleaning unit is locked in a closed position, and an open position in which the openable upper wall of the portable surface cleaning unit is moveable to an open position in which the cyclone chamber and dirt collection chamber are emptyable, wherein the lock is positioned on the portion of the dirt collection chamber sidewall that faces forwardly.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, in a configuration wherein the portable surface cleaning unit is mounted to the upright support structure and the upright support structure extends upwardly from the cleaning head, the vacuum cleaner further comprises a handle provided at an upper end of the vacuum cleaner, the handle has an uppermost hand grip portion that extends forwardly and downwardly.

13. An apparatus comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet with a cyclone and a suction motor that are positioned in the air flow path;

(b) the cyclone comprising a cyclone chamber extending along a cyclone chamber axis, the cyclone chamber comprising a cyclone chamber first end, an opposed cyclone chamber second end spaced apart from the cyclone chamber first end and a cyclone chamber sidewall extending between the first and second cyclone chamber ends, the cyclone chamber first end comprising a cyclone chamber first end wall and a dirt outlet and the opposed cyclone chamber second end comprising a cyclone chamber second end wall, a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, wherein the cyclone chamber first end wall is openable whereby the cyclone chamber is opened;

(c) the fluid outlet comprises a tapered member extending axially inwardly from the cyclone chamber first end wall, the tapered member comprises a longitudinally extending porous media and has a first end located at the cyclone chamber second end wall and a narrower second end spaced axially inwardly from the cyclone chamber second end wall;

(d) a dirt collection chamber exterior to the cyclone chamber and in communication with the dirt outlet to receive dirt therefrom, the dirt collection chamber extending along a dirt collection chamber axis, the dirt collection chamber comprising a dirt collection chamber first end wall, an opposed dirt collection chamber second end wall spaced apart from the first collection chamber first end wall, and a dirt collection chamber sidewall extending therebetween, the dirt collection chamber first end wall being openable whereby the dirt collection chamber is opened; and,

wherein the cyclone chamber first end wall is provided on the dirt collection chamber first end wall and is moveable with the dirt collection chamber first end wall whereby moving the dirt collection chamber first end wall to an open position concurrently opens the cyclone chamber.
