Abstract

A hub assembly for coupling different grasper assemblies including a soft actuator in various configurations to a mechanical robotic components are described. Further described are soft actuators having various reinforcement. Further described are and soft actuators having electroadhesive pads for improved grip, and/or embedded electromagnets for interacting with complementary surfaces on the object being gripped. Still further described are soft actuators having reinforcement mechanisms for reducing or eliminating bowing in a strain limiting layer, or for reinforcing accordion troughs in the soft actuator body.

Claims (26)

1. A soft robotic gripper comprising:

a hub extending outwardly from a central point;

a first set of soft actuators deployed around the central point and configured to transition from an unactuated configuration to an actuated configuration upon application of an inflating fluid; and

a second set of soft actuators deployed around the central point and configured to transition from an unactuated configuration to an actuated configuration upon application of the inflating fluid, wherein

the first set of soft actuators are located at an internal location on the hub that is closer to the central point than the second set of soft actuators.

2. The soft robotic gripper of claim 1 , wherein the first set of soft actuators are configured to be actuatable independently of the second set of soft actuators.

3. The soft robotic gripper of claim 1 , wherein the hub is attached to a tool-side assembly configured to mate to a master-side assembly that is configured to be coupled to a mechanical robotic component.

4. The soft robotic gripper of claim 1 , wherein the first set of soft actuators are offset relative to the second set of soft actuators.

5. The soft robotic gripper of claim 1 , wherein the first set of soft actuators are a different size than the second set of soft actuators.

6. The soft robotic gripper of claim 5 , wherein the first set of soft actuators are smaller than the second set of soft actuators.

7. The soft robotic gripper of claim 5 , further comprising a third set of soft actuators arranged between the first set of actuators and the second set of actuators.

8. The soft robotic gripper of claim 7 , wherein the third set of actuators are of an intermediate size as compared to the first set of soft actuators and the second set of soft actuators.

The soft robotic gripper of claim 5 , wherein the size of the first set of soft robotic actuators is smaller than a target object that the soft robotic gripper is configured to grasp so that the first set of soft robotic actuators is configured not to fully enclose the target object, and the size of the second set of soft robotic actuators is larger than the target object so that the second set of soft robotic actuators is configured to fully enclose the target object.

10. The soft robotic gripper of claim 1 , wherein the hub is configured to adjust an angle of at least one of the first set of soft actuators or the second set of soft actuators.

11. A method comprising:

providing a soft robotic gripper according to claim 1 ; and

actuating at least one of the first set of soft actuators or the second set of soft actuators.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the actuating comprises actuating both the first set of soft actuators and the second set of soft actuators.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the actuating comprises actuating the first set of soft actuators independently of the second set of soft actuators.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising positioning the soft robotic gripper adjacent to a target object to be grasped, wherein the actuating comprises grasping the target object with at least one of the first set of soft actuators or the second set of soft actuators.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising reverse inflating at least one of the first set of soft actuators or the second set of soft actuators prior to positioning the soft robotic gripper.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the actuating comprises actuating the first set of soft actuators, and the first set of soft actuators stabilize the target object without fully encompassing the target object.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the actuating comprises actuating the second set of soft actuators, and the second set of soft actuators fully encompass the target object.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the soft robotic gripper further comprises a third set of soft actuators arranged between the first set of actuators and the second set of actuators, and further comprising actuating the third set of soft actuators.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising adjusting an angle between at least one of the first set of soft actuators or the second set of soft actuators and the hub.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the hub is attached to a tool-side assembly and further comprising attaching the tool-side assembly to a master-side assembly that is configured to be coupled to a mechanical robotic component.
