Abstract

An apparatus, system and method for providing a nozzle having refined print control and enhanced printing speed by providing, on the inside or outside or on an interstitial substrate layer, of any metallic or non-metallic nozzle of a non-conductive surface suitable to support sensors relevant to the FFF process. Heat, force, flow, strain, stress, extrusion force, and like sensors may be provided on the inside or the outside of any nozzle, or on an interstitial substrate layer on the inside or outside of any nozzle. The sensors may be provided about the center access through the nozzle, longitudinally along the center access of the nozzle, or at any of various points along the nozzle, wherein the placement or shape of such sensors may vary in accordance with the type of sensing to be performed by the subject sensor.

Claims (13)

1. A fused deposition printhead for additive manufacturing, capable of receiving a solid print material at an input thereof for extrusion as a liquid from an output thereof, comprising:

a heat-conductive nozzle having a non-heat-conductive chamber therewithin configured to receive the solid print material at an input thereof and extruding the liquid at an output thereof;

a deposited insulative coating on an outermost surface of the heat-conductive nozzle;

a heat-conductive sensor under the deposited insulative coating and connected to a portion of the heat-conductive nozzle, and the heat-conductive sensor configured to transmit information regarding the portion of the heat-conductive nozzle through the insulative coating;

a resistive wire heating element wound around both the insulative coating and the heat-conductive nozzle and configured to progressively heat the solid into the liquid between the input and the output; and

a non-heat-conducting sheath enclosing the insulative coating, the heat-conductive nozzle and the heat-conductive sensor, and having therein embedded the resistive wire heating element; and

a low-emissivity material partially, substantially, or completely surrounding the outside of the non-heat-conducting sheath and configured to reflect infrared energy toward the heat-conductive nozzle.

2. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the deposited insulative coating comprises a dielectric substrate.

3. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the heat-conductive sensor is capable of sensing at least one characteristic of the liquid.

4. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the heat-conductive sensor comprises an integrated RTD element.

5. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the heat-conductive sensor is included in a feedback loop capable of characterizing the liquid.

6. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the heat-conductive sensor is included in a feedback loop capable of characterizing a feed rate of the solid print material.

7. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the solid print material comprises a thermoplastic.
