Abstract

An orthopaedic surgical system includes a sensor module for determining the joint force of a patient's knee joint and an adaptor for coupling various tibial trialing components to the sensor module. The sensor module includes a tibial paddle to which the adaptor is configured to couple. The adaptor and tibial paddle include structures that control the orientation at which the adaptor is attachable to the tibial paddle. Some tibial trialing components may be positioned over the adaptor in a mobile orientation that facilities rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle or a fixed orientation that restricts the rotation of the tibial trialing component.

Claims (38)

1. An orthopaedic surgical instrument system for determining a joint force of a patient's knee joint, the orthopaedic surgical instrument system comprising:

a tibial paddle having an upper housing surface and a lower housing surface opposite the upper housing surface,

a sensor array positioned between the upper and lower housing surfaces of the tibial paddle and configured to generate a sensor signal indicative of the joint force while the tibial paddle is positioned between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur,

a central hub extending upwardly from the upper housing surface of the tibial paddle, and

a tibial trialing component that is selectively positionable around the central hub in (i) a first orientation that prevents rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle and (ii) a second orientation that provides a limited range of rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle.

2. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein a protrusion extends outwardly from the central hub along an axis that is parallel to the upper housing surface of the tibial paddle.

3. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 2 , wherein the tibial trialing component comprises an inner sidewall defining a first aperture, a second aperture in fluid communication with the first aperture, and a third aperture in fluid communication with the first aperture, wherein the first aperture is configured to receive the central hub, wherein the second aperture is configured to receive the protrusion when the tibial trialing component is positioned around the central hub in the first orientation, and wherein the third aperture is configured to receive the protrusion when the tibial trialing component is positioned around the central hub in the second orientation.

4. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 3 , wherein a width of the second aperture is sized to match a width of the protrusion, and wherein a width of the third aperture is larger than the width of the protrusion.

5. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 4 , wherein the tibial trialing component is a trialing shim that is configured to be coupled to a tibial bearing surface trial to form a modular tibial bearing trial for interfacing with one or more of the patient's femur, a femoral trialing component, or a femoral component of an orthopaedic knee prosthesis.

6. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 5 , wherein the trialing shim is coupleable to the tibial bearing surface trial in a first position corresponding to the first orientation and in a second position corresponding to the second orientation.

7. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a tibial bearing trial that is selectively positionable over the central hub.

8. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a spacer block that is selectively positionable over the central hub.

9. A method for determining a joint force of a patient's knee joint, the method comprising:

engaging a tibial trialing component with a central hub extending from a tibial paddle while the tibial trialing component is in a first orientation relative to the tibial paddle,

disengaging the tibial trialing component from the central hub,

re-engaging the tibial trialing component with the central hub while the tibial trialing component is in a second orientation relative to the tibial paddle, wherein one of the first and second orientations prevents rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle, and wherein the other of the first and second orientations provides a limited range of rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle, and

inserting the tibial paddle between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur while the central hub is engaged with the tibial trialing component in either the first orientation or the second orientation to allow a sensor array positioned in the tibial paddle to generate a sensor signal indicative of the joint force.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising rotating the patient's knee joint into flexion such that the sensor signal generated by the sensor array of the sensor module is indicative of joint force values versus flexion angles.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein engaging the tibial trialing component with the central hub while the tibial trialing component is in the first orientation comprises receiving a protrusion extending radially outward from the central hub within a first aperture formed in the tibial trialing component.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein re-engaging the tibial trialing component with the central hub while the tibial trialing component is in the second orientation comprises receiving the protrusion within a second aperture formed in the tibial trialing component.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

interaction of the protrusion and the first aperture prevents rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle while the tibial trialing component is in the first orientation, and

interaction of the protrusion and the second aperture provides a limited range of rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle while the tibial trialing component is in the second orientation.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

interaction of the protrusion and the first aperture provides a limited range of rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle while the tibial trialing component is in the first orientation, and

interaction of the protrusion and the second aperture prevents rotation of the tibial trialing component relative to the tibial paddle while the tibial trialing component is in the second orientation.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

engaging the tibial trialing component with the central hub while the tibial trialing component is in the first orientation further comprises receiving the central hub within a central aperture formed in the tibial trialing component, and

re-engaging the tibial trialing component with the central hub while the tibial trialing component is in the second orientation further comprises receiving the central hub within the central aperture.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first aperture is in fluid communication with the central aperture, and wherein the second aperture is in fluid communication with the central aperture.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the tibial trialing component is a trialing shim, and wherein the method further comprises coupling the trialing shim to a tibial bearing surface trial to assemble a modular tibial bearing trial.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein inserting the tibial paddle between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur while the central hub is engaged with the tibial trialing component comprises inserting the tibial paddle and the assembled modular tibial bearing trial between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

manipulating the patient's knee joint while the tibial paddle and the assembled modular tibial bearing trial are positioned between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur, and

measuring the sensor signal generated by the sensor array while manipulating the patient's knee joint.

20. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

engaging a spacer block with the central hub, and

inserting the tibial paddle and the spacer block between the patient's tibia and the patient's femur.
