Abstract

Communication systems are described that use unequally spaced constellations that have increased capacity compared to conventional constellations operating within a similar SNR band. One embodiment is a digital communications system including a transmitter transmitting signals via a communication channel, the transmitter including a coder capable of receiving user bits and outputting encoded bits at a rate, a mapper capable of mapping encoded bits to symbols in a constellation, and a modulator capable of generating a modulated signal for transmission via the communication channel using symbols generated by the mapper, wherein the constellation is unequally spaced and characterizable by assignment of locations and labels of constellation points to maximize parallel decode capacity of the constellation at a given signal-to-noise ratio so that the constellation provides a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio compared to a uniform constellation that maximizes the minimum distance between constellation points of the uniform constellation.

Claims (140)

1. A method of transmitting data, comprising:

receiving bits at a transmitter comprising a coder, a mapper, and a modulator;

providing encoded bits to the mapper from the coder via a coupling with the mapper, where the encoded bits are output by the coder based upon the received bits using a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code;

mapping the encoded bits to symbols in a symbol constellation using the mapper, where the symbol constellation is selected from a plurality of symbol constellations that includes a group of symbol constellations that each have the same number of constellation points and comprise a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring; and

transmitting a signal via a communication channel having a channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based upon symbols received at the modulator via a coupling with the mapper;

wherein labels and spacing of the constellation points in each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that the symbol constellation is capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the eight point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with sixteen constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 14.8 dB.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the sixteen point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with thirty-two constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 20.4 dB.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the thirty-two point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

a second group of symbol constellations that each contain sixteen constellation points associated with SNRs less than 14.8 dB;

a third group of symbol constellations that each contain thirty-two constellation points associated with SNRs less than 20.4 dB;

each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations comprises a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring where the labels and spacing of the constellation points are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations are capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring;

a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring; and

a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the labels and spacing of the constellation points in each constellation in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are capable of providing greater parallel decoding capacity when operated at its associated SNR than any of the other plurality of symbol constellations when operated at the same SNR.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR subject to at least one constraint.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are multi-dimensional symbol constellations having multiple degrees of freedom.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are non-uniformly spaced in each degree of freedom available to the symbol constellation.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a request at the transmitter from a remote receiver to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel using a specific symbol constellation from the plurality of symbol constellations, where the specific symbol constellation is determined based on a quality measurement by the remote receiver.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the request to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel is a request to use an LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair selected from a plurality of predetermined LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pairs; and

the selected LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair comprises the specific symbol constellation.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations can be substituted by an upgrade to at least one of software and firmware of the transmitter.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the signal transmitted via the communication channel using a receiver, the receiver comprising a demodulator, a demapper, and a decoder;

demodulating the received signal into a demodulated signal using the demodulator;

providing the demodulated signal to the demapper via a coupling between the demodulator and the demapper;

determining likelihoods using the demodulated signal and the selected symbol constellation using the demapper; and

providing a sequence of received bits based upon the LDPC code and the likelihoods received at the decoder via a coupling with the demapper.

21. A method of transmitting data, comprising:

encoding bits using a transmitter based upon received bits using a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code;

mapping the encoded bits to symbols in a symbol constellation using the transmitter, where the symbol constellation is selected from a plurality of symbol constellations that includes a group of symbol constellations that each have the same number of constellation points and comprise a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring; and

transmitting a signal via a communication channel having a channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based upon the mapped symbols using the transmitter;

wherein labels and spacing of the constellation points in each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that the symbol constellation is capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the eight point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with sixteen constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 14.8 dB.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein the sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the sixteen point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

28. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with thirty-two constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 20.4 dB.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein the thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the thirty-two point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

31. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

a second group of symbol constellations that each contain sixteen constellation points associated with SNRs less than 14.8 dB;

a third group of symbol constellations that each contain thirty-two constellation points associated with SNRs less than 20.4 dB;

each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations comprises a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring where the labels and spacing of the constellation points are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations are capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring;

a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring; and

a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

32. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the labels and spacing of the constellation points in each constellation in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are capable of providing greater parallel decoding capacity when operated at its associated SNR than any of the other plurality of symbol constellations when operated at the same SNR.

33. The method of claim 21 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR.

34. The method of claim 21 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR subject to at least one constraint.

35. The method of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are multi-dimensional symbol constellations having multiple degrees of freedom.

36. The method of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are non-uniformly spaced in each degree of freedom available to the symbol constellation.

37. The method of claim 21 , further comprising receiving a request at the transmitter from a remote receiver to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel using a specific symbol constellation from the plurality of symbol constellations, where the specific symbol constellation is determined based on a quality measurement by the remote receiver.

38. The method of claim 37 , wherein:

the request to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel is a request to use an LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair selected from a plurality of predetermined LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pairs; and

the selected LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair comprises the specific symbol constellation.

39. The method of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations can be substituted by an upgrade to at least one of software and firmware of the transmitter.

40. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

receiving the signal transmitted via the communication channel using a receiver;

demodulating the received signal into a demodulated signal using the receiver;

determining likelihoods using the demodulated signal and the selected symbol constellation using the receiver; and

providing a sequence of received bits based upon the LDPC code using the receiver.

41. A method of transmitting data in a communication system, comprising:

transforming encoded bits into a signal using a symbol constellation selected from a plurality of symbol constellations that includes a group of symbol constellations that each have the same number of constellation points and comprise a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring; and

transmitting the signal via a communication channel having a channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR);

wherein labels and spacing of the constellation points in each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that the symbol constellation is capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring.

42. The method of claim 41 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB.

43. The method of claim 42 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

44. The method of claim 43 , wherein the eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the eight point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

45. The method of claim 41 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with sixteen constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 14.8 dB.

46. The method of claim 45 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

47. The method of claim 46 , wherein the sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the sixteen point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

48. The method of claim 41 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with thirty-two constellation points and that are associated with SNRs that are less than 20.4 dB.

49. The method of claim 48 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises a symbol constellation that includes a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

50. The method of claim 49 , wherein the thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring is associated with an SNR that is higher than any of the SNRs associated with the thirty-two point symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations.

51. The method of claim 41 , wherein:

the group of symbol constellations comprises symbol constellations with eight constellation points that are associated with SNRs that are less than 8.4 dB;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

a second group of symbol constellations that each contain sixteen constellation points associated with SNRs less than 14.8 dB;

a third group of symbol constellations that each contain thirty-two constellation points associated with SNRs less than 20.4 dB;

each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations comprises a ring of constellation points that are unequally spaced along the ring where the labels and spacing of the constellation points are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the second and third groups of symbol constellations are capable of providing a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to a similar symbol constellation that differs only in that the constellation points in the ring are equally spaced around the ring;

the plurality of symbol constellations further comprises:

an eight point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring;

a sixteen point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring; and

a thirty-two point symbol constellation that comprises a ring of constellation points that are evenly spaced along the ring.

52. The method of claim 41 , wherein:

each of the plurality of symbol constellations is associated with a different SNR; and

the labels and spacing of the constellation points in each constellation in the group of symbol constellations are arranged such that each of the symbol constellations in the group of symbol constellations are capable of providing greater parallel decoding capacity when operated at its associated SNR than any of the other plurality of symbol constellations when operated at the same SNR.

53. The method of claim 41 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR.

54. The method of claim 41 , wherein the symbol constellations within the group of symbol constellations are characterized by the assignment of labels and the spacing of the constellation points so as to maximize parallel decoding capacity at a specific SNR subject to at least one constraint.

55. The method of claim 41 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are multi-dimensional symbol constellations having multiple degrees of freedom.

56. The method of claim 41 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations are non-uniformly spaced in each degree of freedom available to the symbol constellation.

57. The method of claim 41 , further comprising receiving a request from a remote receiver to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel using a specific symbol constellation from the plurality of symbol constellations, where the specific symbol constellation is determined based on a quality measurement by the remote receiver.

58. The method of claim 57 , wherein:

the request to modulate the signals transmitted via the communication channel is a request to use an LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair selected from a plurality of predetermined LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pairs; and

the selected LDPC code rate and symbol constellation pair comprises the specific symbol constellation.

59. The method of claim 41 , wherein the plurality of symbol constellations can be substituted by an upgrade to at least one of software and firmware.

60. The method of claim 41 , further comprising:

receiving the signal via the communication channel; and

transforming the received signals into encoded bits based upon the selected symbol constellation.
