Golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads
Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads may include a golf club head having a body portion, a first mass portion, and a second mass portion. The first mass portion has a first mass portion first end and a first mass portion second end such that a distance between the first mass portion first end and the first mass portion second end defines a first mass portion dimension. The second mass portion includes a second mass portion first end and a second mass portion second end such that a distance between the second mass portion first end and the second mass portion second end defines a second mass portion dimension. The second mass portion dimension may be substantially greater than the first mass portion dimension, and a total mass of the second mass portion may be greater than or equal to three times a total mass of the first mass portion. 1. A golf club head comprising:
a body portion having a front portion, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a hosel portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, a sole portion with a sole portion edge, and an interior cavity;
a face portion coupled to the front portion to close the interior cavity;
a first mass portion having a first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and a first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ), a distance between the first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) defining a first mass portion dimension;
a second mass portion coupled to the back wall portion below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, the second mass portion having a second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and a second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ), a distance between the second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) defining a second mass portion dimension;
a port on the body portion connected to the interior cavity; and
a polymer material injected into the interior cavity from the port,
wherein the first mass portion is configured to be inserted into the port to close the port,
wherein a distance between the first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein a distance between the second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein the second mass portion dimension is substantially greater than the first mass portion dimension,
wherein a distance between the port and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the port and the hosel portion,
wherein the first mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than the polymer material,
wherein the second mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than a material of the body portion, and
wherein a total mass of the second mass portion is greater than or equal to three times a total mass of the first mass portion.
2. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second mass portion dimension is a length of the second mass portion, and wherein at least a portion of the length of the second mass portion extends in the same direction or substantially the same direction as the sole portion edge.
3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second mass portion dimension is a length of the second mass portion, and wherein at least a portion of the length of the second mass portion extends in the same direction or substantially the same direction as the toe portion edge.
4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first mass portion dimension is a diameter of the first mass portion.
5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a distance between the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge is substantially less than a distance between the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) and the toe portion.
6. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face portion comprises a thickness of greater than about 1.0 millimeter (0.040 inch) and less than about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch).
7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein an outer surface of the first mass portion and an outer surface of the second mass portion define outer surface portions of the back wall portion.
8. A golf club head comprising:
a body portion having a front portion, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a hosel portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, a sole portion with a sole portion edge, and an interior cavity;
a face portion coupled to the front portion to close the interior cavity;
a first port connected to the interior cavity, the first port having a first port first end (PE 1-1 ) and a first port second end (PE 1-2 ), a distance between the first port first end (PE 1-1 ) and the first port second end (PE 1-2 ) defining a first port dimension;
a second port coupled to the back wall portion below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, the second port having a second port first end (PE 2-1 ) and a second port second end (PE 2-2 ), a distance between the second port first end (PE 2-1 ) and the second port second end (PE 2-2 ) defining a second port dimension, the second port dimension being substantially greater than the first port dimension;
a polymer material injected into the interior cavity from the first port;
a first mass portion; and
a second mass portion having a total mass greater than or equal to three times a total mass of the first mass portion,
wherein the first mass portion is configured to be inserted into the first port to close the first port,
wherein the second mass portion is configured to be inserted into the second port,
wherein a distance between the first port first end (PE 1-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the first port second end (PE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein a distance between the second port first end (PE 2-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second port second end (PE 2-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein a distance between the first port second end (PE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge is substantially less than a distance between the second port second end (PE 2-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein the first mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than the polymer material, and
wherein the second mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than a material of the body portion.
9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first port dimension is visible to an individual viewing an outer surface of the back wall portion of the back portion.
10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the second port dimension is visible to an individual viewing an outer surface of the back wall portion of the back portion.
11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first port dimension is a diameter of the first port.
12. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein a distance between the first mass portion and the face portion is less than a distance between at least a portion of the second mass portion and the face portion.
13. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the interior cavity is at least partially filled with the polymer material.
14. A golf club head comprising:
a body portion having a front portion, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a hosel portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, a sole portion with a sole portion edge, and an interior cavity;
a face portion coupled to the front portion to close the interior cavity;
a first mass portion having a first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and a first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ), a distance between the first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) defining a first mass portion dimension;
a second mass portion coupled to the back wall portion below a horizontal midplane of the body portion, the second mass portion having a second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and a second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ), a distance between the second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) defining a second mass portion dimension;
a port on the body portion connected to the interior cavity; and
a polymer material injected into the interior cavity from the port,
wherein the first mass portion is configured to be inserted into the port to close the port,
wherein a distance between the first mass portion first end (MPE 1-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein a distance between the second mass portion first end (MPE 2-1 ) and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) and the toe portion edge,
wherein the second mass portion dimension is substantially greater than the first mass portion dimension,
wherein a distance between the port and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the port and the hosel portion,
wherein the first mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than the polymer material,
wherein the second mass portion is made from a material having a greater density than a material of the body portion,
wherein a total mass of the second mass portion is greater than or equal to three times a total mass of the first mass portion,
wherein the first mass portion is visible to an individual viewing an outer surface of the back wall portion of the back portion, and
wherein the second mass portion is visible to an individual viewing an outer surface of the back wall portion of the back portion.
15. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the second mass portion dimension is a length of the second mass portion, and wherein at least a portion of the length of the second mass portion extends in the same direction or substantially the same direction as the sole portion edge.
16. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the second mass portion dimension is a length of the second mass portion, and wherein at least a portion of the length of the second mass portion extends in the same direction or substantially the same direction as the toe portion edge.
17. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the first mass portion dimension is a diameter of the first mass portion.
18. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein a distance between the first mass portion second end (MPE 1-2 ) and the toe portion edge is substantially less than a distance between the second mass portion second end (MPE 2-2 ) and the toe portion.
19. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the face portion comprises a thickness of greater than about 1.0 millimeter (0.040 inch) and less than about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch).
20. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein an outer surface of the first mass portion and an outer surface of the second mass portion define outer surface portions of the back wall portion.
