Abstract

A basketball launching device includes a user interface for receiving user input regarding a subset of locations of varying distance from a throwing mechanism to launch basketballs to for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal as part of a practice session. A distance adjustment mechanism is connected to the throwing mechanism for adjusting an exit velocity of the basketballs launched by the throwing mechanism. A controller receives data regarding the user input and commands the throwing mechanism and the distance adjustment mechanism to undertake operations for launching at least one of the basketballs towards each of the locations in the subset.

Claims (40)

1 . A basketball launching device with automated, motorized launch distance adjustment, said basketball launching device comprising:

a user interface configured to receive user input regarding locations at a basketball playing surface for basketballs to be passed as part of a practice session, wherein at least some of said user input is provided at varying linear distance from, and angular position relative to, a visual depiction at the user interface of the basketball launching device to represent the locations at the basketball playing surface, which vary in linear distance from, and angular position relative to, the basketball launching device;

a throwing mechanism for launching the basketballs toward said locations at the basketball playing surface for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal, said throwing mechanism comprising:

an arm;

an axle located along the arm such that said arm acts as a catapult;

a spring, having a first end attached to a first portion of said arm at a first side of said axle for causing movement of said arm, when released, where movement of said arm includes movement of a second portion of said arm to launch one of for the basketballs located thereat;

an engagement arm located rearward of said arm and configured to selectively engage said arm;

a motor configured to selectively initiate release of said arm to launch the basketballs when operated upon corresponding operational command from a controller; and linkage arms interconnected and configured for relative movement;

a distance adjustment mechanism comprising a linear actuator, a flexible member, and one or more linkage arms, where a first end of said one or more linkage arms of the distance adjustment mechanism is connected to a first end of said flexible member, a second end of said flexible member is connected to said linear actuator, and a second end of said one or more linkage arms of the distance adjustment mechanism is connected to a second end of the spring of said throwing mechanism thereby mechanically linking the spring of the throwing mechanism with the linear actuator of the distance adjustment mechanism, wherein the mechanical linkage between the spring of the throwing mechanism and the linear actuator is provided such that tension forces of the spring of said throwing mechanism are adjusted by operation of said linear actuator; and

the controller in electronic communication with said user interface, said throwing mechanism, and said distance adjustment mechanism, wherein said controller is configured to receive data regarding said user input from said user interface and, in response, automatically provide electronic instructions to said throwing mechanism, which when received by said throwing mechanism, cause operations to be undertaken by said throwing mechanism which cause at least one of the basketballs to be launched towards each one of said locations at the basketball playing surface based, at least in part, on the respective angular position of the locations of the user input relative to the representation at the user interface of the basketball launching device indicated in said user input, and to the distance adjustment mechanism, when received by said distance adjustment mechanism, cause the linear actuator of the distance adjustment mechanism to lengthen or to shorten, based, at least in part, on the respective linear distance of the locations of the user input relative to the representation at the user interface of the basketball launching device indicated in said user input thereby adjusting a longitudinal length of, and therefore the tension forces in, the spring and an initial launch velocity of the basketballs launched by said throwing mechanism.

2 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 wherein:

said user interface comprises a touch screen configured to display a visual depiction of at least a basketball three-point arc, a basketball key, the basketball launching device, and an icon for each one of said locations of the user input in a manner visually correspondent with the locations of the user input.

3 . The basketball launching device of claim 2 wherein:

said icons indicate, by way of visible symbols, each associated with a respective one of the icons, a passing order for said locations during said practice session;

said user interface comprises an initiate practice session option; and

said user interface is configured to accept revisions including addition of other ones of said locations for said practice session, removal of existing ones of said locations for said practice session, and reordering of said locations for said practice session until data is received indicating selection of said initiate practice session option and said controller is configured to cause said icons, including said visible symbols, to be updated accordingly.

4 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 further comprising:

a structural framework, wherein said user interface is connected to said structural framework, and wherein said throwing mechanism is connected to said structural framework in a manner which permits pivoting movement about a vertically extending axis; and

a collection net assembly connected to said structural framework and configured to capture made, and at least some missed, basketball shooting attempts.

5 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 wherein: said throwing mechanism further comprises: a ram mounted to a first one of said linkage arms of said throwing mechanism;

a third one of said linkage arms of said throwing mechanism is connected to said motor, and a second one of said linkage arms of said throwing mechanism is connected to said first linkage arm of said throwing mechanism and said second linkage arm of said throwing mechanism; and

operation of said motor moves said linkage arms of said throwing mechanism such that said ram contacts said first portion of said arm and forces said arm to rotate about said pivot into a second position where said second portion of said arm is secured to said engagement arm, thereby securing said arm in said second position and, further operation of said motor moves said ram away from said first portion of said arm and into contact with said engagement arm, thereby releasing said arm from said engagement arm for pivoting movement about said pivot into a first position by the tension forces exerted by said spring, thereby launching a respective one of the basketballs.

6 . The basketball launching device of claim 5 wherein:

said throwing mechanism further comprises:

supports, wherein said axle extends between said supports, said arm is mounted to said axle, said first portion of said arm extends forward of said axle, and said second portion of said arm extends rearward of said axle; and

a stop bar provided at said second portion of said arm which frictionally engages said supports, or stoppers located thereon, as said arm rotates about said axle to arrest movement of said arm.

7 . The throwing mechanism of claim 6 wherein:

said throwing mechanism further comprises:

an attachment portion located at said second portion of said arm;

a guide located at a forward portion of said engagement arm;

a securement portion located at said forward portion of said engagement arm above said guide, wherein said guide, a forward surface of said engagement arm, and said securement portion define a notch which receives said attachment portion when said arm is in said second position; and

a wheel located at a first end of said ram which travels along said guide, thereby forcing said engagement arm to pivot rearward as said ram is advanced to release said attachment portion from said notch;

said guide comprises a ramped surface provided along at least a portion of said forward portion of said engagement arm; and

said engagement arm is configured for movement upon contact with said ram.

8 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 further comprising:

a network communication device configured to facilitate electronic communication between said user interface and said controller, wherein said user interface is located remote from said throwing mechanism.

9 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 wherein: said throwing mechanism further comprises a basketball holder at the second portion of said arm of the throwing mechanism at a second side of said axle.

10 . The basketball launching device of claim 1 wherein:

the linear actuator is oriented to actuate primarily in a horizontal direction; and

the distance adjustment mechanism further comprises a pulley, wherein the flexible member comprises a flexible cable or line engaging the pulley.
