Abstract

A cargo container loading and unloading system for a transportation system, the cargo container loading and unloading system including a loading zone; and at least one opening connecting the loading zone to a transportation tube of the transportation system.

Claims (26)

1. A cargo container loading and unloading system for a transportation vehicle of a transportation system, the transportation vehicle having a closeable cargo accommodation space, the cargo container loading and unloading system comprising:

a loading zone for accommodating the transportation vehicle to be at least one of loaded and unloaded of cargo containers from the closeable cargo accommodation space within the transportation vehicle; and

at least one opening connecting the loading zone to an enclosed transportation tube of the transportation system in which the transportation vehicle traverses,

wherein the transportation vehicle is rotatable around a longitudinal axis of the transportation vehicle traversing the enclosed transportation tube and the enclosed transportation tube is operable to maintain an internal environment within the enclosed transportation tube.

2. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 1 , wherein the loading zone is configured for receiving the cargo containers for loading and unloading the cargo containers into the transportation vehicle of the transportation system.

3. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 1 , further comprising an elevator system for moving the cargo containers from a receiving area to the loading zone.

4. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 3 , wherein the elevator system is operable to move the cargo containers into the transportation vehicle of the transportation system.

5. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the cargo containers is removed from a water-based vehicle at a receiving area.

6. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 1 , wherein the loading zone includes a rotatable platform operable to rotate the transportation vehicle of the transportation system.

7. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 1 , further comprising a water-based vehicle docking area.

8. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 7 , wherein the water-based vehicle docking area is adjacent a receiving area, which is connected to the loading zone.

9. The cargo container loading and unloading system of claim 8 , wherein the water-based vehicle docking area is connected to the loading zone via at least one elevator system for moving the cargo containers from the receiving area to the loading zone.

10. A method of operating a cargo container loading and unloading system for a transportation vehicle of a transportation system, the transportation vehicle having a closeable cargo accommodation space, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of cargo containers in a loading zone for accommodating the transportation vehicle to be at least one of loaded and unloaded of cargo containers, the loading zone having at least one opening connecting the loading zone to an enclosed transportation tube of the transportation system;

arranging at least one of the cargo containers for insertion into the transportation vehicle arranged in the loading zone; and

inserting the at least one of the cargo containers into the closeable cargo accommodation space of the transportation vehicle, while the transportation vehicle is arranged in the loading zone,

wherein the transportation vehicle is rotatable around a longitudinal axis of the transportation vehicle traversing the enclosed transportation tube and the enclosed transportation tube is operable to maintain an internal environment within the enclosed transportation tube.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising moving the cargo containers to the loading zone from a receiving area, wherein the moving comprises using one or more elevators.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising onboarding cargo containers into respective transportation vehicles directly from the one or more elevators.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving the at least one cargo container at the receiving area from a water-based transportation vehicle; and

moving the at least one cargo container to the loading zone.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising using a rotatable platform operable to rotate a transportation vehicle of the transportation system in the loading zone.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the transportation vehicle includes a vehicle door that seals the closeable cargo accommodation space, the method further comprising closing the vehicle door after the inserting.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising moving the cargo containers from a water-based vehicle docking area, which is adjacent the receiving area and connected to the loading zone.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the water-based vehicle docking area is connected to the loading zone via at least one elevator system for moving the cargo containers from the receiving area to the loading zone.
