Abstract

Provided herein are anode and/or cathode pan assemblies comprising unique manifold, outlet tube, and/or baffle plate configurations; electrochemical cell and/or electrolyzer containing the anode and/or the cathode pan assemblies; and methods to use and manufacture the same.

Claims (31)

1. An electrochemical cell, comprising:

an anode pan or a cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan;

one or more ribs inside the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan; and

a baffle plate coupled to the one or more ribs, wherein the baffle plate comprises a plurality of slots having a width equal to a width of the one or more ribs so that plurality of slots are configured to receive the one or more ribs,

wherein the baffle plate partitions a volume in the anode pan or the cathode pan or both the anode pan and the cathode pan to create a riser region on a first side of the baffle plate and a down-comer region on a second side of the baffle plate opposite of the first side,

wherein the riser region facilitates gas formed in the electrochemical cell to rise and avoid formation of gas pockets, and

wherein the down-comer region facilitates downward flow of an electrolyte disposed in the electrochemical cell, and

wherein the rise of the gas and the downward flow of the electrolyte causes circulation in the electrochemical cell, the circulation configured to facilitate thermal equilibration and reduced temperature variations in the electrolyte and reduced heating of a membrane.

2. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , further comprising a manifold positioned inside the anode or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan, wherein a cross sectional area of the manifold comprises a depth from about 0.25 to about 0.75 of a depth of the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan, wherein the cross sectional area of the manifold is from about 520 mm 2 to about 6200 mm 2 .

3. The electrochemical cell of claim 2 , wherein the baffle plate is perpendicular to the one or more ribs.

4. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ribs comprises two adjacent edges separated by a notch, and wherein an edge of the one or more ribs is slidably received by one of the plurality of slots in the baffle plate.

5. The electrochemical cell of claim 4 , wherein the notch has a length about 5-100 mm or at least some of the plurality of slots have a length of from about 5 mm to about 100_mm.

6. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , further comprising an electrode attached to the one or more ribs of the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan.

7. The electrochemical cell of claim 6 , wherein the baffle plate is disposed between the electrode and the anode pan or the cathode pan.

8. The electrochemical cell of claim 6 , wherein the baffle plate is disposed from about 5 mm to about 15 mm away from the electrode.

9. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , wherein placement of the baffle plate is at from about 0.25 to about 0.5 of a depth of the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan.

10. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , wherein the baffle plate is disposed in the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and cathode pan so as to leave a space at a top side or a bottom side, or both a top side and a bottom side of the baffle plate, the space disposed between the baffle plate and the anode pan or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan, and wherein the space is configured to permit gas and liquid flow therethrough.

11. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , wherein the down-comer region is formed between the baffle plate and a bottom of the anode pan or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan, and wherein the riser region is formed between the baffle plate and a top of the anode pan or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan.

12. The electrochemical cell of claim 1 , wherein the anode pan or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan or the cathode pan is disposed inside a hydrogen gas producing electrochemical cell.

13. An electrochemical cell, comprising:

an anode pan or a cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan;

one or more ribs inside the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan; and

a baffle plate coupled to the one or more ribs, wherein the baffle plate comprises one or more slots each corresponding to the one or more ribs so that the one or more slots are configured to receive the one or more ribs,

wherein the baffle plate partitions the anode pan or the cathode pan or both the anode pan and the cathode pan to create a first region on a first side of the baffle plate and a second region on a second side of the baffle plate opposite of the first side.

14. The electrochemical cell of claim 13 , wherein the first region facilitates rising of gas formed in the electrochemical cell to reduce formation of gas pockets and the second region facilitates downward flow of electrolyte disposed in the electrochemical cell, wherein rising of the gas and the downward flow of the electrolyte causes circulation in the electrochemical cell to facilitate thermal equilibration and reduced temperature variation in the electrolyte.

15. The electrochemical cell of claim 13 , further comprising a manifold positioned inside the anode pan or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan.

16. The electrochemical cell of claim 15 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the manifold comprises a depth from about 0.25 to about 0.75 of a depth of the anode pan, or the cathode pan, or both the anode pan and the cathode pan.
