Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to lenses, devices, methods and/or systems for addressing refractive error. Certain embodiments are directed to changing or controlling the wavefront of the light entering a human eye. The lenses, devices, methods and/or systems can be used for correcting, addressing, mitigating or treating refractive errors and provide excellent vision at distances encompassing far to near without significant ghosting. The refractive error may for example arise from myopia, hyperopia, or presbyopia with or without astigmatism. Certain disclosed embodiments of lenses, devices and/or methods include embodiments that address foveal and/or peripheral vision. Exemplary of lenses in the fields of certain embodiments include contact lenses, corneal onlays, corneal inlays, and lenses for intraocular devices both anterior and posterior chamber, accommodating intraocular lenses, electro-active spectacle lenses and/or refractive surgery.

Claims (52)

1. A lens for an eye, the lens comprising:

an optical zone;

an optical axis centered within the optical zone;

a power profile within the optical zone and comprising:

a global maximum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

a global minimum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

at least one transition zone between the global maximum and the global minimum,

at least one focal distance for a Zernike coefficient term,

a retinal image quality (RIQ), and

a through-focus RIQ (TFRIQ) that is anterior and/or posterior to a retina of the eye; and

wherein the at least one transition zone is continuous.

2. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the Zernike coefficient term has an even radial order having zero angular frequency component.

3. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the TFRIQ is kept within predefined bounds of the retinal RIQ.

The lens of claim 3 , wherein the bounds comprise a fixed range about the value for retinal RIQ, the ranges being used with one or more of the following: a simple Strehl ratio, point spread function, modulation transfer function, phase transfer function, optical transfer function, Strehl ratio in Fourier domain, or combinations thereof.

5. The lens of claim 3 , wherein the bounds are variable and comprise a rate of change with increasing distance from the retina.

The lens of claim 1 , wherein a slope with an acceptably low magnitude for TFRIQ comprises a slope of TFRIQ about zero, slope of TFRIQ equal to zero, a slope of TFRIQ greater than zero and less than 0.25 per diopter, a slope of TFRIQ greater than −0.25 and less than zero per diopter, a slope of TFRIQ greater than zero and less than 0.5 per diopter, or a slope of TFRIQ greater than −0.5 and less than zero per diopter.

7. The lens of claim 6 , wherein a merit function provides TFRIQ with an acceptably low slope in magnitude or a slope that is substantially equal to zero such that the resulting power profile ameliorates presbyopia.

8. The lens of claim 7 , wherein the power profile comprises high RIQ, low change in RIQ, low slope of TFRIQ, or a combination thereof.

The lens of claim 1 , further comprising a lens treating hyperopia wherein the power profile provides an acceptable on-axis RIQ and TFRIQ with a slope that improves in a direction of eye growth; wherein acceptable measurements of high, on-axis RIQ comprise at least 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.65, 0.7, or 0.8.

10. The lens of claim 9 , wherein the power profile provides improving RIQ in the direction of eye growth by comprising a high RIQ across a large range of field angles, a high on-axis RIQ, or a combination thereof.

The lens of claim 1 , wherein a slope of RIQ may correspond to one or more variants of RIQ, including monochromatic RIQ with or without considering effect of accommodation, polychromatic RIQ with or without considering effect of accommodation, global RIQ, RIQ considered with myopic impetus time signal, global RIQ with myopic impetus time signal, or a combination thereof.

12. The lens of claim 1 , wherein an acceptably low change in RIQ with pupil diameter comprises a change in one or more of the following ranges: 0 to 0.05, 0.05 to 0.1, or 0.1 to 0.15.

13. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the power profile is rotationally symmetric.

14. The lens of claim 13 , wherein the power profile comprises substantially rotationally symmetric Zernike terms to correct astigmatism up to at least −0.5 DC, −0.75 DC, −1 DC, or −1.25 DC.

15. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the power profile is astigmatic, non-rotationally symmetric, or a combination thereof.

16. The lens of claim 1 , wherein a near distance is the range of 33 cm to 50 cm or 40 cm to 50 cm; intermediate distance is the range of 50 cm to 100 cm, 50 cm to 80 cm, or 50 cm to 70 cm; and far distance is the range of 100 cm or greater, 80 cm or greater, or 70 cm or greater.

17. A pair of lenses, both lenses comprising:

an optical zone;

an optical axis centered within the optical zone;

a power profile within the optical zone and comprising:

a base power,

a global maximum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

a global minimum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

at least one transition zone between the global maximum and the global minimum,

at least one focal distance for a Zernike coefficient term,

a retinal image quality (RIQ), and

a through-focus RIQ (TFRIQ) that is anterior and/or posterior to a retina of the eye;

wherein the at least one transition zone is continuous; and

wherein the extended through-focus for both lenses allows the base powers to be separated, or used without sacrificing, or substantially reducing, far, intermediate, or near vision between the two base powers.

18. A pair of lenses, both lens comprising:

an optical zone;

an optical axis centered within the optical zone;

a power profile within the optical zone and comprising:

a base power,

a global maximum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

a global minimum within 2 mm of the center of the optical zone,

at least one transition zone between the global maximum and the global minimum,

at least one focal distance for a Zernike coefficient term,

a retinal image quality (RIQ), and

a through-focus RIQ (TFRIQ) that is anterior and/or posterior to a retina of the eye;

wherein the at least one transition zone is continuous; and

wherein one lens is optimized for distance vision and the other lens is optimized for near vision by extending the TFRIQ and selecting the base power, power profile, or a combination thereof for one lens and a different base power, power profile, or a combination thereof for the other lens.
