Abstract

The present disclosure provides an aerogel composition which is durable and easy to handle, which has favorable performance in aqueous environments, and which also has favorable combustion and self-heating properties. Also provided is a method of preparing an aerogel composition which is durable and easy to handle, which has favorable performance in aqueous environments, and which has favorable combustion and self-heating properties. Further provided is a method of improving the hydrophobicity, the liquid water uptake, the heat of combustion, or the onset of thermal decomposition temperature of an aerogel composition.

Claims (24)

1. A reinforced aerogel composition comprising a silica-based framework and at least one hydrophobic-bound silicon, wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a ratio of T 1-2 :T 3 of from 0.01 to 0.3 as determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra.

2. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a ratio of Q 2-3 :Q 4 of between 0.1 and 1.5 as determined using NMR spectra.

The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more of microfibers, fillers, reinforcing agents, stabilizers, thickeners, elastic compounds, opacifiers, coloring or pigmentation compounds, radiation absorbing compounds, radiation reflecting compounds, corrosion inhibitors, thermally conductive components, phase change materials, pH adjustors, redox adjustors, HCN mitigators, off-gas mitigators, electrically conductive compounds, electrically dielectric compounds, magnetic compounds, radar blocking components, hardeners, anti-shrinking agents, smoke suppressors, and fire suppressants.

4. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more additives selected from metal carbides, metal oxides, diatomite, metal ferrites, and mixtures thereof.

5. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , further comprising an additive, wherein the additive comprises a carbide selected from the group consisting of boron carbide, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, tungsten carbide, and mixtures thereof.

6. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 having a thermal conductivity between 15 mW/M*K and 40 mW/M*K.

7. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , wherein a hydrophobic organic material content in the reinforced aerogel composition is between 1 wt % and 15 wt %.

8. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , further comprising a reinforcement material that includes one or both of a fiber reinforcement material and a foam reinforcement material.

9. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , further comprising boron, aluminum, iron, steel, or carbon.

10. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a heat of combustion of from 250 cal/g to 750 cal/g.

11. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 , wherein the NMR is cross polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) 29 Si NMR.

12. A method comprising exposing the reinforced aerogel composition of claim 1 to a temperature of at least 200° C.

13. A reinforced aerogel composition comprising a silica-based framework and at least one hydrophobic-bound silicon, wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a ratio of Q 2-3 :Q 4 of between 0.1 and 1.5 as determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra.

14. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a ratio of T 1-2 :T 3 of between 0.01 and 0.272 as determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra.

The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , further comprising one or more of microfibers, fillers, reinforcing agents, stabilizers, thickeners, elastic compounds, opacifiers, coloring or pigmentation compounds, radiation absorbing compounds, radiation reflecting compounds, corrosion inhibitors, thermally conductive components, phase change materials, pH adjustors, redox adjustors, HCN mitigators, off-gas mitigators, electrically conductive compounds, electrically dielectric compounds, magnetic compounds, radar blocking components, hardeners, anti-shrinking agents, smoke suppressors, and fire suppressants.

The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , further comprising one or more additives comprising boron carbide, diatomite, Manganese ferrite, MnO, NiO, SnO, Ag 2 O, B 12 O 3 , carbon black, titanium oxide, iron titanium oxide, aluminum oxide, zirconium silicate, zirconium oxide, iron (II) oxide, iron (III) oxide, manganese dioxide, chromium oxide, SiC, TiC, WC, or mixtures thereof.

17. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , further comprising an additive, wherein the additive comprises a carbide selected from the group consisting of boron carbide, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, tungsten carbide, and mixtures thereof.

18. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , f wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a thermal conductivity between 15 mW/M*K and 40 mW/M*K.

19. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , wherein a hydrophobic organic material content in the reinforced aerogel composition is between 2 wt % and 8 wt %.

20. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , further comprising a reinforcement material that comprises at least one of a fiber reinforcement material and a foam reinforcement material.

21. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , further comprising boron, aluminum, iron, steel, or carbon.

22. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , wherein the reinforced aerogel composition has a heat of combustion of 600 cal/g or less.

23. The reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 , wherein the NMR is cross polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) 29 Si NMR.

24. A method comprising exposing the reinforced aerogel composition of claim 13 to a temperature of at least 200° C.
